A friend got a Powerbook G4 from her Uncle recently and she was hoping to use it as her main computer.

Its running well but the more I use it the more I get the feeling its obsolete.. A lot of newer apps are Intel only as far as im aware. I cannot install MacFuse, Chrome, Firefox 3, Flash 10 etc...

It has an ancient version of Safari that doesnt render several modern websites and crashes when loading youtube?! I got youtube working in firefox but there is a youtube warning that says support for that browser will be discontinued in March...

I think a newer version of OS X would allow me to install some of these apps but Chrome is definitely Intel only..

Is it worth buying Tiger or Leopard? She just wants a functional laptop and I don't know if it's worth spending money on this machine.

The current version of Safari works in Tiger but i'm not sure how long Tiger will be supported. Look on eBay for a cheap version. I've used 10.4 on a similar machine and it worked fine. I think it would probably be faster than Leopard. If all the software you need runs on Tiger, I suggest using it.

    Unless someone else thinks otherwise.

Not too up on the mac side of things.. Where would one buy a copy of OS X Leopard? And roughly how much would it cost?

    Thanks!

Thats 10.6 Snow Leopard, not 10.5 Leopard. Snow Leopard won't work on a non-Intel processor.

Conzy, it might be old, but it will be a very usable machine (for quite a while yet) with 10.4 or 10.5 on it. If you can get the OS at the right price, its worth doing. Wouldnt bother with chrome (or FF) on OS X. Honestly, Safari works best overall.
