So I've had 8.04 LTS on my machine in work more or less since it was released. I'm now getting tired of using ancient versions of software and fancy a bit of an oul' upgrade.

The beta 1 version of 10.04 LTS is out in two weeks. Has anyone used these beta versions before? If so, how did you find them?

I usually switch a machine over once it's in Beta to see what problems I'll come up against when I switch over in numbers. I've had good experiences on the whole.
One thing I would say though is that if you're on 8.04 because it's an LTS release,
upgrading that to anything except the released 10.04 may not be a good continuation of that policy.
Is the choice a work one, or your own :-)

If you just want the latest versions of firefox and thunderbird while staying with 8.04,
take a look at Ubuntuzilla. The link I've given has instructions for 8.04,
and I've used it on several machines still running 8.04.3

Cheers. I updated the version of openoffice there manually yesterday. Might give that ubuntuzilla a lash to keep me going 'til the official release of 10.04.

It's my machine though. I mean the company own it, but I'm free to do what I want with it. Once I don't trouble them for licencing fees or cause malware to get spread around they're happy. :)

Tried that ubuntuzilla today and no joy. It's 32bit only. They linked another PPA repository which I tried and it updated me to 3.6 but it was total fail (couldn't close tabs, other weird behaviour) so I just went back to the repo version (3.0.18).

Agreed. I'm willing to wait. :)

i tried using ubuntu 10 beta the other day I thought well its pretty much the same as the last but its getting there and runs nice.

    but linux still need work.

the only recent one I thought looks really look and was great to us - the flash was 9.10 remix.

but Im willing to wait till linux 10 proper comes out and then they bring out 10 netbook remix now that Im looking forward too hopfully they will have fixed the flash problem by then.

never has a flash problem with linux mint.

I've tried a live session of 10.04, It's shaping up to be a great release. In the past, I ran Karmic from the last Alpha and never had any major problems.

But still, you have only a month to wait, you've waited this long so you might as well wait for the final release.

There are some 300 to choose from ...... distrowatch lists most if not all.

You could start with Mepis, PCLinuxOS -> Gnome, KDE, Xfce, LXDE or E17 - or Mandriva.
After that try going through the list of the Distrowatch top 15 or 20.

That should keep you busy for a while :D

    good night Mary Ellen ;)

buddy i looked at the other os's there today and have to say they dont look that great.

I wiped my laptop got rid of 9.10 netbook remix cause of the flash problem and popped on windows 7 on it plus linux mint 7. its running great have to say.

if I could find one that was very user friendly like mint I'd def try it use it and test it.

Ehm, why not try, use and test Mint then?

I consider any Ubuntu release up to three months after it goes public to be a beta. They often ship with beta versions of programs and with very little testing so you never know what you're getting. Always install on the craptop as well.

Might as well give Lucid a whirl when it's officially out of beta to see what they've rogered up this time.

lucid what now ? how do I download that and where ? cool name but.

I tryed Linux Mint 8 and it looked amazing but I couldnt use my 02 modem by plugging it in. and it I have to look for drivers thats a lot of work.

so I looked into the problem and I wasnt the only one having the problem. mint 9 is coming out but Im guessing its goin to same.

Im really looking forward too 10.04 netbook remix. if its anything like 9.10 remix without the flash problems well it will be amazing.

Is the O2 modem a 3G thing or a USB ADSL modem?

Well its true that none have the 'look' of Ubuntu ...... and if that is what you want then Ubuntu is the one for you. :D

I have to admit I prefer long term stability over looks which I can change at will ..... particularly using KDE.

Lucid Lynx is the codename for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Ubuntu releases are often referred to by their codename because it's easier than saying 8.04 (Hardy Heron) or 9.10 (Karmic Koala).

My experience with mobile broadband modem has generally been quite good with Ubuntu and I would have assumed it would be as handy with Mint. Normally it's just a case of plugging them in, it'll then offer you a country list and a provider list and you're good to go. The only one that I've had issues with is Eircom because it's not listed in 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) but it should work fine as soon as I can be bothered getting the manual settings.

I didnt know what linux to use when I first started off and I watch a lot of films and mix audio and video. some suggested i try mint I tryed it. its easy to use very user friendly and Im still learning which is great.

9.10 remix is far more user friendly then mint a 2 year old could use it :)

which is your fav linux johnboy
