    Hi all,
Orwell Wheelers are running a pub quiz next Tuesday, 9th March in Uncle Tom's Cabin, Lower Dundrum. Start time 8pm.
    All welcome.
It's a general knowledge quiz for a cash prize with a stand alone cycling question after each round for a separate prize.
Teams of 4-5 at €40 per table.
    Separate raffle on the night.
It's a fun night out and any funds raised will be donated to club member Michelle Geoghegan to help with living expenses as she embarks on a full season of European racing with the Dutch Moving Ladies squad.
Michelle made a great start to her first full season abroad (and only her second full season of cycle racing) when she finished 39th out of 164 starters at the Het Nieuwsblad last weekend.
    See you all there!

Can I be on your team Dirk?

Eh....Dirk imagines how the night will go:

    "Capital of France?"

    "Planet-x!"

    "Largest lake in Ireland?"

    "Planet-x!"

    "Shut up Blorg!"

Yes, of course you can be on the team! :)

Can non members do this. I like quizzes.

What's "general knowledge"? Does that mean questions about mountain biking?

Yes non-members are welcome, I would certainly be happy to have you on Team Dirk Voodoo-Planet X!

I'm in. Is there a spot left on your team dirk?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,505 ✭✭✭✭DirkVoodoo

Most definitely, that rounds it out nicely. Team Planet-X:

    DirkVoodoo
    Blorg
    ROK ON
    aidan.offbeat
    El Tonto (maybe)

Looks like an excellent team. If there are any questions about the best value carbon bike for less than a grand that you can't put two 750ml bottles on then you guys are quids in!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 213 ✭✭The Crunch

Right, I can confirm that there are no questions about frames from English direct sales companies that may or may not be pink (the frames not the company, that is. Either way there are no Planet-X questions!).
However, there are some excellent prizes in the raffle including a very nice camera.
Kick off is 8pm and all are welcome,. This isn't an Orwell exclusive. Teams of four to five, €40.

We will be there, unfortunately though El Tonto can't make it but we have a star substitute in Doctor Bob.

A slot has opened up last minute so if anyone was thinking about doing this but was worried they wouldn't be on the winning team, let us know :)

    Team Planet-X for the win!

Who are we at this stage? Pity about Tonto, he has a store of knowledge regarding the history of pro cycling.

I know I certainly don't know anything about it anyway.

I'm horsing down leftovers from last night, wondering if I need to change out of this shirt...

    Actually, I probably shouldn't be posting. :)

Hmm, maybe my vast cycling knowledge would be of use to you. "Joey Dunlop? On a Derailleur? No, wait a second..."

Never mind cycling knowledge, do you know where to find the Islets of Langerhans? Or what Freddie Mercury's real name was? Or the sitcom named after a Beckett play?

We managed a very creditable joint second place, losing by just two points. The winners, who had been mid-table from early on, came with a late surge that would make most cyclists blush (I believe they had to stay behind afterwards to give samples...). Fortunately we didn't go home empty handed- Aidan won some shorts, and our fifth man, John, won a helmet. Who knows how we would have done had The_Claw deigned to join us...

Good fun night. Well done all, and enjoy the new wheels, Michelle. :)

Before I heap too much praise on this wonderful podium result, I would like to clarify one point. There were more than 3 teams, wern't there?

    Your faith is touching! :P

(There were 13 teams, I think.)

Well done on the second place and sincere apologies ob my last minute withdrawal Dirk.
I did know the Freddie Mercury one but haven't a clue on the other two. What is the sitcom?

    Tough quiz alright!

Good to meet doctor bob - and a great man for a quiz team!

We really could have used el_tonto's knowledge of obscure cycling facts though!

    Happy Days was the sitcom.

Oh - I think we decided we should ask el_tonto all the cycling questions anyway to see if he knew them. (No Cheating!)

Here are all I can remember:

    1) What year did Roche win the Ras?

    2) Who were the winners of the Tour of Ireland over the last 3 years?

    3) Who did Deignan beat to a stage win in the Vuelta last year, and where did the stage finish?

    4) What was Kelly's first classics win?

    5) 4 Irish men started the 91 tour - who was the only one to finish?

    6) What were the last 3 teams that Kelly rode for?

    7) The 1998 Tour started in Ireland, but who were the winners of the 3 Irish stages?

    8)

    9)

    10)

    6. PDM, Festina and I probably would have had a hard time remembering Catavana.
    7. Wouldn't have remembered a single one.

I do enjoy a good pub quiz, but I find it hard to get the time to do anything these days.

    I'll give this a go.

    1. 79
    2. Pinnoti, Downing, don't remember who won 3 years ago
    3. Kreuziger, was it in Toledo?
    4. Milan San Remo? (I was thinking he bookended his career with this, but google it, and I was wrong)
    5. Earley?
    6. Festina, PDM, and I wouldn't have remember Catavan
    7. Did Boardman win the prologue? Don't remember the other two. You'd think that with seeing the stages, you'd remember who won.

Only one I think I know for sure is Kelly's first classic was the '83 Giro di Lombardia in a sprint with if I remember correctly LeMond, Hinault & Kuiper.......? Think about 10cm separated all 4 of them at the line....

Islets of Langerhans are in the pancreas I think

I remember this so well (relatively speaking!). I had a copy of International Cycle Sport with a detailed report which I read over and over again. We got a long time out of each cycling comic in those days. Especially ones with the odd colour snap. If I recall correctly Roche was in the group, too, and went for the line from the final corner a decent distance from the line. I think Moser and Kuiper were there, too, while Lemond was motivated to win the Super Prestige Pernod and nearly pinched it. Those Sem jerseys were cool and that Vitus was the business. I actually bought one in '89 and still have it in the shed somewhere...

This is my favourite Kelly picture. It just sums the man up in one fraction of a second. Do you still have the original magazine ? Moser and Kuiper are the two hidden cyclists behind Kelly and Van der Poel. It was a class field when you look at their Palmares. Happy memories The Crunch!
