In the aftermath of a major shake-up at Infinity Ward, Activision has announced three new Call of Duty games as well as reconfirming that two downloadable map packs will be coming for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in 2010. The company did not go into any details about what happened at Infinity Ward yesterday other than to confirm that founders Jason West and Vince Zampella were let go.

Are you ready, because there's a lot of new announcements.

First, Activision has announced that they will form a business unit related to the growth of the Call of Duty franchise, similar to Microsoft's Halo studio, 343 Industries.

While it's hard to imagine the Call of Duty series getting any bigger, Activision reconfirmed that Modern Warfare 2 will be growing later this year with two downloadable map packs. The packs are in development at Infinity Ward and it's likely more maps will follow these two as Activision refers to them the "first two" DLC packs.

Moving on to new games, Activision announced that the currently unnamed Call of Duty 7 is in development at Treyarch and that it'll be released this Fall.

Not only that, but 2011 will see the release of two games in the CoD franchise: Call of Duty 8 is in development at an unnamed studio and Sledgehammer Games is working on a action-adventure spinoff game. Sledgehammer is a new, internal Activision studio that was founded last year by Dead Space veterans Glen A. Schofield and Michael Condrey.

Finally, Activision is taking the first steps towards a Call of Duty MMO by announcing that "the company is in discussions with a select number of partners to bring the franchise to Asia, one of the fastest growing regions for online multiplayer games in the world."

Is that enough Call of Duty for you? We'll have more on all of these games soon.

Call of duty MMO? Could be interesting...

No it couldn't. The series is turning in to an absolute sham.

It's a long way off yet, i'd like to think they will have gotten their act together for the next IW release in the series.

Surely the 2 heads getting let go would make you think that they're 'trying' to get back on track with a viable game?

Does anyone else think that because they're going to release 2 newer versions in the next 18 months, that it means they'll forget about MW2, stop improving it and leave it behind?

Maybe I'm just spoiled because I'm used to games lasting for more than a year (Resistance, GTA series etc).

Or do you guys think it's a positive thing that they're already planning two new releases so quick?

I know the gaming industry improves and develops quickly, but can they really release two more so quickly? Surely the graphics won't improve, so it's just going to be new story lines in campaign and the online experience won't change too much...

Of course, as I'm new to the COD series, maybe other things drastically change, but I don't know what _can_ change in online gameplay apart from different weapons/perks....

u know ive been wondering the same thing myself u see new games every year pushing the boundries with graphics stories gameplay etc but how much can they change in one year . its not as bad as it sounds because treyarch have been working on number 7 since number 5 but still it doesnt seem to be enough of a gap to matter .........

    Not a hope
They are clearly going to just milk this dry.

Guess it has gone full circle with Medal of Honour -> Call of Duty -> ?

Pretty much agree with everything there. Basically after MW2 has sold so well, they want to throw anything out there with the CoD/MW name on it.
