I've just been asked out and I've been off the dating scene for a very long time so I'm a bit lost! We are just going for a drink, so I'm wondering what to wear that's quite casual but doesn't look like I haven't made an effort!

    Thanks

I'd wear a nice dress - think of the floral ones that are currently in the shops.

Or alternatively, can't go wrong with a little black dress.

You can dress them down with a cute denim jacket or a cardigan.

To be honest, nothing wrong with looking like you've made the effort as long as you're not using Lady Gaga as your "look" for the evening.

Another alternative could be a pair of nice trousers with a fitted, gathered jersey top. Throw on a pair of heels and some nice jewellery.

Was there any mention of Where you are going on this date? The LBD might be great if you are going out for dinner but perhaps a bit ott if you are just going down to the Hope & Anchor for a pint.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

I agree with the above, depending on your own style the LBD I think would be ott for down the pub. It really does depend on your style but from my experience and my friends first date experience I would go with dressy jeans, boots and a nice top or casual dress.

True about the LBD being a bit OTT.

As the posters mentioned, the most important thing is to feel comfortable. I LOVE getting dressed up and would quite happily spend an evening in a pub very dressed up but I know that's not for everyone.

The most important thing to feel confident and to make sure that you wear the clothes rather than vice versa.

Listen, if you're really worried then find out where you're going and pop down for a drink with a friend of yours a few nights before hand. At least then you'll know what kind of crowd it is.

Anyway, there's nothing wrong with being a little over-dressed. I ended up at a dinner once where it was all €60 blow-drys and cocktail dresses, I waltzed up in a pair of uggs, jeans and a lace trimmed vest. My boyfriend at the time was very, very lucky that he survived the night intact ("but last time everyone was in fleeces and jeans" - not enough rolly eyes in the world)...WAY WORSE BEING UNDER DRESSED!

Maybe something like this from A-wear?

Black jeans, simple enough top with a long necklace, cardi/blazer/ heels.

Thats my failsafe outfit for every i-dunno-what-the-dress-code-is occasion and its never let me down

Seriously? What would you expect to see someone wearing on a first date? I'm curious now.

And defo base it on where you're going. If its the pub I would do the nice jeans, dressy top, killer heels and accessories route. Out for dinner = dress. :)
Mainly it's whatever you'll feel good in as well. Good luck!!!!

If you've time, then I'd go to the hairdresser for a wash and blow dry.

Nice hair dresses up any outfit and I always feel great after getting my hair done. Might put a bit of bounce in your step and up the confidence levels a bit.

Thanks a million for all the suggestions everyone, it's going to be a fairly causal pub midweek so think I'll go with nice jeans, dressy top and heels.

Now I just have to combat the nerves!

Tell us the name of the pub. We'll all sneek in and get a table near you so we can give you super sekret thumbs up or down him. We'll also bring along emergency flats, heel glue, a shrug, two spare tops, a formal evening gown, a cocktail dress, hat, wig, bikini...just in case. :D

    have fun.
