Hi, I was wondering if someone can help me out. My employer informed me yesterday that they are putting me on a 3 day week.
    1. Can you automatically do that or can I take my redunancy?
    2. If i accept the 3 day week and then should i be laid off will it effect my reducancy payment?
    3. I get paid monthly. I was just paid on the 01/03/10. Can they put me on a 3 day week starting next week?
Also what are my entitlements. I assume I can claim mortgage interest supplement and job seekers for the 2 days i'm not working. Is there anything else I can do?

    Hi There,

Your employer has to give you 30 days notice that they are putting you on a 3 day week. So your 3 day week will not commence until 2nd April.

If you accept the 3 day week and are subsequently made redundant within the next 12 months, your redundancy will be calculated based on your 5 day working week.

You are entitled to claim social welfare for the two days you are not working. Its about €40 per day, not much but better than nothing.

Im not sure what you are entitled to in relation to your mortgage, probably not a lot.

Having been put on a 3 day week last August i've been claiming social for 3 days! The social is based on a 6 day working week for some reason and for me a single person it works out at 98 euro per week! Not great but better than nothing.

Im expecting to be made redundant sometime soon and redundancy pay is based on a 5 day week but only for the first year that you've been working the 3 day week. After that keep asking your boss to put you back on a 5 day week and even if he/she cant you will still get your redundancy based on a 5 day working week(i hope)

    Marie Claire,

Its also important that you ask your employer about once a month when you are going to be reinstated as a full time employee. Do this via email and keep the paper trail.

Also, I believe your annual leave entitlement remains the same on the three day week as it would on a five day week. The only way there will be a change to your annual leave is if your working hours are half or less than half of what they were on the 5 day week.

I also believe that if your hours on the three day week are half or less than half of what they were on the 5 day week that you can apply to be made redundant.

You can find more info on Dept of Enterprise, Trade and Employment website or at your local Citizens Information.
