Yesterday dial tone on landline died but broadband stayed on so reported fault.

This morning eircom called me on mobile and having established I had a cordless phone set asked me to unplug the phone line for my cordless phone set, as well as the power supply.

Dial tone came back (and stayed back once I reconnected cordless.)

He told me that if they came out it would be 100 euro plus VAT for call.

In passing he recommended doing the same with my router if problem arises again before calling them

Explanation seems to be a power spike.
