    Windows XP Pro
    Service pack 3

I've added a mapped drive to my computer. When i try to open it i get a windows error 'Windows cannot find sys.exe. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.

If i use run \\server\folder it opens successfully.

My anti virus is up to date, I've done a scan and found no errors. I have a second mapped drive to the the same server that works.

    Any ideas whats happening

Sounds like malware to me. Try downloading Malwarebytes and running a scan.

Edit: If that doesn't work ask a mod to have this sent over to the Virus & Malware removal forum and ASJ might be able to advice.

The W32/Stando-A worm (Sophos) uses the filename sys.exe and spreads through network shares by copying itself to the root folder of the share and creating an autorun.inf that points to the copy.

If your antivirus software previously removed sys.exe but not the autorun.inf that points to it, you'd see that error message.

    Hi,

I disconnected the network drive and did a full malware scan of the PC but no error's were found. I re-mapped the drive but I get the same error, I can open it if I use the explorer option.

The laptop is one of 2 new laptops I've got so I setup the other laptop, connected it to the domain and mapped the drives. On the new laptop, fresh outta the box thats never been on the net i have the same problem.

The problem only exits with one folder, ie \\server1\folder1. If I map \\server1\folder2 it works. All other pcs on the network can access \\server1\folder1

    Any fresh ideas?

    Delete \\server1\folder1\autorun.inf

If you don't see it, turn on Show hidden files and folders and see if it appears. If Hide extensions for known file types is checked, you won't see the .inf part.

Cheers snowbat, deleted the autorun.inf files and remapped the drives, alls working. Interesting that only had the problem on new compaq's

Just a shot in the dark here, but autorun gets disabled by certain policies and/or security updates, so it may be the lack of one of these that was allowing the new machines to autorun the mapped share in the first place, whereas the older machines may not allow autorun?
