we have a parrot in the house and its lost two large tail feathers and a few other pen size feathers in the space of 24hours.it seems to be growing new feathers but it seems to have changed personality wise too.its not as loud as it used to be and can spend hours just sittin on its perch bobbing its head and making a noise every 3 seconds.also does anyone know of a good vet to bring her too.thanks

Sorry I don't know, but where do you live?

Bairbre O'Malley in Bray is an exotics specialist.
Parrots lose feathers, it's normal, just like you lose hairs. They will grow back. It would be of concern if the bird is plucking them out or losing them at a rapid rate where you can see bald skin.
Plucking can be for a large number of reasons, but can be boredom, anxiety, irritants (do you smoke in the house? Damages the parrot's lungs much more than ours and irritates the skin ie. plucking), mites, I could go on. Maybe examine the parrot's environment and routine (enough company, toys, stimulation) and perhaps review the diet. In the meantime book an appointment with Bairbre if you can get there.

If you could answer these few questions might be able to suggest things but in the mean time to rule out any health reasons a trip to an avian vet if your worried is a must if a bird appears ill a vet trip is the first port of call. Even if it turns out there's nothing wrong better to be safe than sorry with birds.

What type of parrot is it?
What size is the cage, what toys are in the cage, how much flight time does the bird get daily, how much human company does the bird get daily. Where's the cage located. Do you know the birds history eg bought from young or did the bird come from another home etc.

The answers will help figure out what's wrong.
Birds moult regularly and loose feathers sometimes a lot at a time but feather plucking is common too due to a variety of reasons from boredom to stress to mites etc.
