Auto Gearbox Question

    Hi guys,

Quick and slightly unusual question for y'all!

Using an auto box on a 30+ year old car is there absolutely, positively no way in the world that the box will let the engine over-rev / blow from excessive, well, excessie reving?

I know it sounds stupid but there's a genuine reason I ask!

The car was originally an auto but has a B&M clutch kit and shifter added so you can pretty much drive it like a manual. However there is no rev counter fitted which doesn't bother me most of the time as I don't push it too much using the 'manual' shift if ya know what I mean.

So, by just putting the car into Drive and slamming my foot to the floor is it possible to over rev / blow the engine?

I am not sure really if all engines have a RPM limiter. You could put a podded RPM gauge in without too much hassle. Is it one of those big block american v8`s?

    Yes it is Lightning!

How would I go about fitting that?

    Agreed,

But the long and short of it is that I don't actually know if there's a rev limiter so if I am completely flat to the mat depending on the auto box to change before it peaks I could well blow the engine?

I presume you're planning on drag racing your car as I cant see any other reason for "putting the car into Drive and slamming my foot to the floor"
In which case, yes, there would be a chance of blowing your engine.
But once in awhile with a good condition engine and gearbox, it shouldnt do any real harm.

Rev limiters came in with the introduction of electronic fuel injection.

    Thanks Kevin,

Yeah you're dead right! Little excursion coming up and I want to be sure not to damage the engine. I really have to get the gauges sorted but I'm a little uneasy about the box taking care of itself under these circumstances. Obviously enough there'll be no let up on the pedal until I cross that 1/4 mile but if there's a risk of damage I might just give it a miss.

    What do you think?

If the car is 30 odd years old I'd be very suprised if it has a rev limiter, assuming its got the standard ignition set up.

No dude, but been there a few times for the Mopar Nationals as a spectator. There's an event on up in Enniskillen on the 14th and they've invited our club up to have something different to the usual rice rockets! :D

Ordered a pod tacho from Summit Racing today for $50. Will land here for around €50 so all good! Thanks for all the help lads!

If you have an MSD electronic ignition they have a specific line-out for a Rev Counter, as they normally do a dual spark to the coil which makes your Rev counter go a bit mad.

As regards a Rev limiter, might be a good idea to pop one in of you are going to do a lot of 1/4 mile stuff: http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/products/ProductDetail.asp?cls=MSPORT&pcode=OMERLC
