Anyone remember these statues in pubs? John Player cigarettes reps (or at least i think it was used distribute them to pubs.)
They were clay statues of a hurler or footballer and there was one for every county team. id love to come across them again. they were class. used be fascinated with them as a kid.

There's a man in Kilkenny city that sells replicas of them, you'd have to trawl through the antique shops outside of Dublin to get an original one. I got my Galway one in Conroy's egg shop in the Irishtown area of Kilkenny city in 2002. He had all of the main hurling counties, and Tipperary as well, the day I got mone.

If he's still open, you'll find the shop on the left had side of the street, almost directly across from the Smithicks brewery, as you head down towards St Canice's COI cathedral (the one with the tower).....

Mmm, it's a while since I bought it, but it was under a tenner I think. He's a nice man, hope he's still there, moved away from KK 5 years ago.....

they are very old fashioned. the jerseys are 60's/70's style. do you remember the breaking ball all Ireland hurling special from 2001?
there was a tipp statue and a galway statue on the cover; class

I dont suppose you could attach a photo of that Galway statue if you still have it and get a chance to Stroke? Would give people an even clearer picture of what im on about.

Here's a picture (hopefully!) of the Kilkenny statue I found in my attic here in Meath taken with last week's Irish Times magazine in the background. I got two of them, and the Galway one is at my parents house in Galway. Any luck in contacting the egg shop? Think he might also sell fish....

I'll have to get mine valued so! Not in the priscine condition that I bought it in.

(I think he might mean the original 1950's statuettes he has on the shelf on the back wall of the shop. AFAIR, he said that the one I bought was a modern version made by a fella in Kilmacow. How are Tipp going to do this year? Galway aren't exactly flying....)

He wasn't willing to sell any one of them, whether its sentiment or monetary i dunno. either way i respect his decision.
i don't mind a defeat to cork. tipp had bad start but its normal cycle to lose to cork every once in a while and tipp fans shouldn't buy into it too much. i fancy galway to beat KK at weekend because history will play a massive part in the match and will give ye an incentive. ye always have a chance with big Joe in the team

    Well lads
Been mad after these as well, beautiful pieces altogether. As already stated the original ones from the 50's are worth serious money. I have been informed by a lad who owns an antique shop in Limerick city that there might have been a second batch of these sent out to pubs about thirty years ago (late 70's early 80's). There might be a few of them in Devitt's pub on Camden street in Dublin (only heard that on the auld googling) in a locked cabinet, could be mistaken there.
Funny story for ye, an aunt of mine had one ( A Tipperary hurler it twas probably an original 1950's model) in her house in Tipperary along with a framed picture of the 89 team, alway marveled at it. The ****ing thing is lost now she tells me.
If I do get lucky enough to get one, there will be a picture of it posted up for ye lads.
go raibh iomanaiocht ann go deo!
