    Hi all,

I've tried citizen's info website and searching boards and google etc but can't come up with a definitive answer from anywhere.

I'm currently in receipt of btea and council grant, will I continue to get both or is it one or the other?

I know it's one or the other for new students but nobody seems to know what's happening with existing students.

    Thanks!

Nope sorry dude the good times are gone.

I have complained and also questioning the legality of them doing so under the equal status act 2000.
They will still pay the fees on the higher education grant + btea.

You can get the full grant but you`ll have to drop the btea.

I didn’t think they could do it but they have L Im not entitled to the btea doing a masters anyway so I didn’t complain to much.

If you already get both, you will continue to get both. If you start college this year, you will not get both.

I was told and it states on the higher grant web site that for the 2010/2011 year that if you are in reciept of btea you will not qualify for any maintanance or top up.
I dont qualify for btea doing a masters anyway.

Where did you hear this ??

Asked for clarification from Dept Ed but the Minister also announced this in Budget 2010. Got following reply in email from Dept Ed.

"Students currently in receipt of the BTEA or VTOS allowances and the maintenance grant will continue to be eligible for both payments for the duration of their current course provided they meet the terms and conditions of the scheme. Students progressing to a new course, with effect from 2010/11, will no longer be eligible for student support maintenance grants but can apply for assistance towards the cost of the student services charge and any fees payable."

BTEA never payable for Masters, grant may be sometimes.

Thats fair enough. I thought they were really screwing people over there.
They didnt give me that information when I asked.

I wounder can you get both if you doing a H.dip as you can get beta if your doing that.

Sounds to me like it would be classified as a new course which would mean you can't get both grant and BTEA.
