So I've just gotten in from work and I've not had the best day to be honest. I've been teaching at this school since September covering for a woman who is out on sick leave. She hadn't been in touch with anyone all year but rang today to say she'll be back in 3 weeks :(

It's a pretty awful time of year for a teacher to become jobless, there are really only 8 full school weeks left, where am I going to find something for 8 weeks, it was hard enough to find this one....What do I do now? Anyone been in this situation/in the same situation? It's bad enough that you are leaving the students that you've grown attached to and the other members of staff as well.

Here goes another round of 'Will I/Won't I have a job come September?'. This is only my third year teaching but already I dread the summertime, you can't enjoy it properly, you're too busy looking for a job and I'm fcuking sick of it. There's next to nothing out there. In the past 3 years I have lived in 3 different counties because I've had to move looking for work. I'm nearly 27, I'm at the stage where I'd like to put down some roots, not wonder where I'll have to move to in September, look for accommodation, make new friends......I'm tired :( I know I shouldn't be complaining about moving, I'm lucky to have even the smallest bit of work in this current climate but I'm so disheartened right now I can't even begin to explain....

It'd be nice to be able to enjoy the summertime and not have that constant anxious feeling.....

You're not the only one worrying. I know that's not much consolation....

Being told you've only 3 weeks of work left....sounds like something that would happen in the private sector ;)

Best of luck finding work though and remember not to limit yourself to Teaching roles when you're looking for work.

That's a good point and I've thought about it.....problem is teaching is all I've ever been focused on and now that there really aren't any jobs I haven't a clue what else to look at

Genuine question, are you young, free, single?
Would you consider Canada or Australia as a place to possibly seek work in the education sector - even as a change of scene/temp-wise?
I know they are crying out for certain categories of teachers.

    Sorry to hear your predicament.

I'm nearly 27 and I'm free to move around as I've no real ties. I would definitely consider emigrating, particularly to Canada. Do you mind if I ask if you know where I could find out more about teaching in Canada?

    Thanks :)

Hey gagiteebo, as I read your post I felt like I had written it myself, I too am a teacher, finished up a job just before mid term covering sick leave also, and had thought I'd be there until the end of the year. Have also lived in a few counties of late and would like to settle down somewhere. So I completely understand how you feel and why you feel so miserable.

But I don't know what to say to make you feel better. I suppose I just wanted you to know there are people who understand what your going through and do sympathise with your situation. As "public sector" workers were are told to get over it as this is what is happening in the private sector all the time, but that's unfair as you actually haven't had any job security at all for years.

I completely understand the summer time dread also, spending every week searching, applying, hoping for an interview, getting an interview, then waiting to hear from it, not hearing, rejection letter after rejection letter and then its the end of August you have no job and the summer is gone.

Maybe try to apply for jobs outside of teaching, look in to emigrating, depending on your subjects England maybe an option, there are loads of agencies online who will help you out in the search.

I know this hasn't been very helpful, but you aint alone. Chin up :)

You could try to get a job in a play school or other job working with kids. Any admin or shop work would also be an option as well as looking over seas.

As other have said you are not the only one. Just keep looking and applying.
