I'm going to get chorus uninstalled and sky + hd in so was wondering how long is the backlog on sky+ hd boxes meaning if I ring them today how long do people reckon it'll take for to get the box and also do I have to connect the sky +hd box to a phone line cos that could be a real pain.

For a better faster installation call an independant installer.

I was going to get a Sky+HD box about three weeks ago (didn't in the end), but when I rang, the agent said that the backlog has been cleared on the boxes and it takes 7-10 days from when you order the box. As for the phoneline connector, you have to for regular sky boxes, so I assume you have to for the Sky+HD ones too.

When my wife had Sky HD+ installed she had to have phone installed for initial connection, after that the engineer told her to remove it. Seems it is only really required if you have multiroom or need on demand or pay movies

you dont have to plug it into a landline but if you choose not to then you will be charged a once of fee of 39.50

My wife has never been charged a fee nor has she has a letter to say it is disconnected. I do with multi room boxes they do check and you do get the letter

you dont need a phone line connected unless you have multiroom.

As far as I am aware you don't need a phone line for 1 box. I know someone who had Sky + installed last week.I was looking after the house for them when it was installed the installer told me there was no need for a phone line with only one box.

The Standard fee for a no phone line connection is an extra €39.50.If you have a phone line just connect it for the initial install. But if you don't have a line the €39.50 is charged.

Ok, I am only talking Sky+ here not HD. The box was free, (not 50 euro) instalation was 30 euro. No phone line needed. Went through Sky (booth) Northside shopping centre

I got Sky+HD installed recently and when the installer went looking for the phone line I said there was none. He asked if I had paid the 39 euro fee and I just said 'Of course'. He was happy enough with that. I had never paid any extra charge for it

I cancelled my UPC/Chorus on Friday and ordered Sky. Viewing card came today and engineer is coming this Friday. So safe to say they've cleared their backlog :)

I don't have phoneline either - just had to pay one off fee

    How much was your fee?

I'll tell you guys a trick... Order your box online... But put in your bank details slightly incorrectly, they'll call you to confirm and waive the no phone fee to 'apologise'.

At least that exact thing happened to me a few weeks ago.

Hiya, was signed in earlier under my GFs account.

I think the fee was €39.50 or similar.

    cheers

We have a phone line in the house it's just very far away from the room where our tv is. I phoned them about it today to inquire and they said it'd be okay.

If you don't want a run of phone line in the house just for one box, you could always ask the installer would he have a loose phone cable to connect just whiles he does the call back. Alot of engineers have one in the van for this purpose. It's not a problem when it's a single box install.

I had a SkyHD+ box installed 9/3/2010 as an upgrade from a standard box. The cost, paid on the spot to the engineer, was €60 fitting charge (new dual LNB plus second cable) + €90 purchase cost of the box. I did not upgrade my package to receive HD channels. I had been assured when arranging for the box to be fitted that the requirement to maintain a phone connection to it was dropped about 8 months ago. The engineer assumed that I had a landline, which I do, and he briefly established a connection from it (using a very long lead) to the box. Could the €40 charge apply when no landline connection (however brief) is available

When are you getting it installed. It seems everyone has had different experiences with charges and the need for a phone line. Report back please with your results. :)

The fee applies only if there is no active land line available to do a call back from a single Sky box.

If a land line is not available, the engineer has to call Sky, provide them with all the relevant details and get them to do a manual activation. Sky then pair the box with the card and send the signals for the pairing over air.

Some tidy profit there for one phonecall........

It's Sky that charges the fee, not the engineer making the call.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,146 ✭✭✭Morrisseeee

Yeah, thats what I meant, Sky are getting a nice little earner there ! There's NO justification for charging THAT much for one phonecall, same goes for charging €60 for an install of a HD box where there's already a Sky+ box (and maybe also add in the €39 if no phoneline is present) !!

    I get you.

    I only wish Sky did !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;):p

Maybe this is my dark side coming out but is it possible a scam is taking place.
100% the install I witnessed recently was 30 euro for the install. The engineer called sky for the box and card match and thats it. I thought they would install the phone line and they told me you don't need it for a single install. Are other engineers making gravy?

Maybe not a scam, but definitely a 'rip-off'. But unfortunatley not enough people are complaining about things like this !

No Brian, it's not a scam.
