Anyone at the match between clongowes & pres bray? I just saw article in examiner today talking about ugly scenes near the end - ambulance called and all after the match was over!

I read on Leinsterfans that the Pres number 8 was punched and kicked near the end of the game. This led to a brawl involving both teams, The ref didn't deal with it very well, not sending anyone off. This led to another brawl at the next ruck. The number 8 colapsed after the game and was taken to hospital. Bad press for Clongowes two days in a row. You would imagine that the Leinster Branch will have to investigate.

In my day Clongowes were known as 'The Zoo' don't know if this is still the case. Can't say I liked Pres Bray much either as they beat us in one critical match that still sticks in my memory - although the year eludes me! :D

Never really remember much agro when we played Clongowes, used to be Terenure on the pitch and Pauls off the pitch we had fights with. Thought when I started reading the thread that it was going to be fights between the supporters!

I wouldn't mind hearing Fred Cogleys thoughts on this.

There was serious bad blood between Clongowes and Pres in the early 80s following a near riot (between players) at a pre christmas friendly in Pres. All friendles at all age levels between the schools were cancelled after that for at least the rest of the 80s (dont know if they resumed in more recent years)

If thats the case then it was utterly ridiculous. Its only schools level for flip's sake.
Anyone involved with these players and pupils psyching them up to such a degree should be held responsible, in my opinion. That goes for any sport.

All games except the cup games in the new year were friendlies in those days, by the way. There was no league of any descript in place.

I was only in junior school in the early 80's so don't remember that but thinking about it I don't actually remember playing against Clongowes which is why I don't remember there being any bad blood lol We had serious fight with Terenure my first year on the seniors and weren't allowed play them again for at least a few years. Then we had that slight incident with Paul's in Sydney Parade after the cup match.

That incident didnt happen in the context of a cup match so I dont think excessive psyching up was the issue - things just boiled over among the players on that particular day.

The 2 schools discontinued freindly fixtures afterwards which was as much as they could do.
