Cork's politicians have recovered

For those who do not live in Cork and who might think the City is still traumatised by the recent flooding, fear not !
It is a tribute to Cork's local politicians that they have recovered, girded their loins and used the first Council meeting of the year to focus on one of their main preoccupations; that is, the organising of junkets or as they like to call it, conferences and seminars. The minutes for Jan 11 show they have approved fourteen different junkets for months Dec to February :

Cutbacks or the recession have not been allowed to impact on or interfere with their travel plans nor have they sought the opinions of Cork's citizens about their travel perks.Michael Martin's brother Sean Martin seems to have done particularly well.
By co-incidence, a separate item on the minutes show that the salary of the Lord Mayor increased from € 34,000 odd in 1992 to 100,000 in 2009, not including his Cllr's salary or the car and driver provided for him or the € 50,000 + expense allowance.
In the face of such extravagance, it is difficult to justify calls to central government for finance for remedial measures or for compensation for flood damage. In fact it is embarrassing to have Cork's politicians play the poor mouth when looking for Government funding when they behave so extravagantly when it comes to salaries and perks for themselves.
The real juicy junkets to San Franciso, Shanghai and other international locations have not been dealt with yet.

The mention of Trips to San Francisco by Cork Politicians always makes me think of the Late Cllr Bernie Murphys trip to San Francisco (at no cost to the taxpayer).
They really look after themselves though and do know what the imporant business is!
