Qualifying looks as tough as ever this year!

    What do people think?

    Obvious 12

    Harrington
    Mcllroy
    Westwood
    Poulter
    Casey
    Kaymer
    Stenson
    Garcia
    Karlsson
    Fisher
    Donald
    Jimenez

Knocking on the door but would not want to be needing a wild card as i couldn't see Monty straying far from the list above.

    Quiros
    O.Wilson
    A.Hansen
    Kjeldsen
    E.Molinari
    F.Molinari
    McDowell
    S.Hansen

Anyone else who could surprise? Chris Wood prehaps?? Justin Rose surely not??

Unfortunetly id say Graeme McDowells , best chance would be a wild card entry this year. Theres a good chance that he could get it do because of his results with McIlroy in the world cup.
Also if any of the Molinari brothers where to qualify by merit i wouldnt be suprised to see the other one get picked for the team.

Based on what it took in 2008 to qualify: Approx 200 world points or 1.4 mill on the money list....

    Already there practically:
    Mcllroy
    Westwood
    Poulter

World class and going along Nicely:
    Harrington
    Kaymer
Casey( only just back from injury)

Plucky Upstarts who could go the distance
    E molinari
    Ross McGowan
    Simon dyson

World class and you know they'll get there:
    Garcia
    Stenson

    Need to up the ante:
    Karlsson
    Fisher
    Donald
    Jimenez
    Fisher
    GMcdowell
    J rose
    The Hansons

If you consider we will have at 3 debutants - McIlroy and Kaymer and at least one of the plucky upstarts, then there's going to be a lot of old hands fighting for those 3 wildcards.

Barring injury 100% certain to be on the team and if they don't qualify they will be picked.

    Mcllroy WR
    Westwood WR
    Poulter WR
    Casey WR
Donald (probably as a captains pick)

Will almost certainly qualify on their own merit but if they don't may not be picked as their matchplay histories are less than impressive.
    Harrington ET
    Kaymer ET
    Stenson
    Garcia ET

add to that I think Wilson, F. molinari and possibly Noren.

An outsider can still get in there with just a couple of good results in high value tournaments like the open.

If I were betting it would be like this:

    Mcllroy WR
    Westwood WR
    Poulter WR
    Casey WR
    Harrington ET
    Kaymer ET
    Quiros ET
    Garcia ET
    Noren ET
    Donald CP
    F. Molinari CP
Dredge CP (Just cos he's welsh)

Where going to have a great team this year, id say:

    W.R - Westwood
    W.R - Casey
    W.R - McIlroy
    W.R - Poulter

    Europe - Kaymer
    Europe - Harrington
    Europe - Garcia
    Europe - Stenson
    Europe - Karlsson

    Fisher
    Donald
    Wilson
    McGowan
    McDowell
Molinari's all have good chances for a captains pick.

Would love to see Clarke play in one more ryder cup do.

I can't see Donald making the team this year.

Stenson is another one I think might struggle this year.

I think this year team will be a lot different than in previous years with Rory, Martin shoeins to make the team.

There is a lot of talent coming through at the moment which is only good for the team. Monty picks will be tough this year. I can see a few disappointed players.

    Stenson

Stenson won the world m/play in 08 and 3rd in 09 not bad m/play record

With McDowell a certain to play now. We can nearly be sure him and Rory will be teaming up together.

Worrying for the likes of Garcia a bit of the pace to making the team on merit.

I wonder will he go for wild card or play more in Europe?

Casey is further back than I thought

Someone needs to work out that they pick this team the wrong way round.

If they went to the European List first (followed by the World List), not only would they get a better team but it would give the perception of promoting the European Tour more... Primarily for a better team though.

If Rhys Davies carries on his form for the next couple of months then he could be the dark horse pick, he has great temperament, amazing putter which is crucial in matchplay, and plays well at Celtic manor

I'd rather rhys davies than garcia everyday.......

He'd really get the home fans into it too. I remember well the atmos at k club when padraig and mcginley were coming through, we gave them a savage reception and the lads loved it.

Absolutely, on current form. Garcia looks like he needs a break, he's just playing too poorly in a Ryder Cup year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,098 ✭✭✭Johnny_Fontane

I'd like to see Karlsson in there.

Previous ryder cup experience is invaluable and he was sensational in the us two years ago. Does anyone remember the amount of putts he sank, from memory mcdowell was excellent too and obviously poulter.

fair enough bringing people with form, but some form + ryder cup experience is preferred....

    Westwood
    McIlroy
    Harrington
    Poulter
    Casey
    Donald
    Davies
    McDowell
    Quiros
    Molinari (hedging my bets here)
    Kaymer
    Garcia (wildcard)

A relatively lean period for continental Europe.

Top 12 in WR right now (I know its not how they qualify)

    1 Lee Westwood, Eng (3)
    2 Luke Donald, Eng (7)
    3 Paul Casey, Eng (8)
    4 Ian Poulter, Eng (9)
    5 Rory McIlroy, Nir (10)
    6 Martin Kaymer, Deu (11)
    7 Graeme McDowell, Nir (13)
    8 Padraig Harrington, Irl (15)
    9 Robert Karlsson, Swe (27)
    10 Henrik Stenson, Swe (29)
    11 Justin Rose, Eng (33)
    12 Sergio Garcia, Esp (36)

Would be happy with that, though not convinced about Garcia. Would rather Jimenez for experience, Quiros/Fisher for their big hitting, or how about someone solid and gutsy like Soren Kjeldsen.

I'd boot Rose and Garcia off that team and get the Molinari brothers in there or Quiros/Jimenez.

Would have to overlook Garcia this time around, watching him lately it seems as if the last place he wants to be is on a golf course, and his temprament could be disruptive in team room (don't forget him & Paddy are far from best buds). Harrington may struggle to be make team but would be a certain captains pick.
I know he's not well placed at the moment but don't forget Ross Fisher, current world matchplay champion who gave that pr!ck Kim a good beating last year and also hits a massive ball.

harringtons form in ryder cups is atrocious - however majors he has won.
I wouldnt put him down as a 'certain captains pick' - because if he doesnt qualify automatically from where he is now, he'll have to play terribly over the next three months - which along with his ryder cup history - could mean that monty rules him out.

Have to agree with you there. Padraig wouldn't be a certain pick in my eyes.

I think we all agree he isn't playing his best currently.

Still a few months for him to make the squad.

Lets hope and I don't think Monty will do a Faldo and have his wild cards already selected before qualifying had finished

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,543 ✭✭✭JerryHandbag

I'd be amazed if Monty didnt pick Harrington if it came to that. But then I was amazed Faldo didnt pick Darren Clarke last time too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,848 ✭✭✭soundsham

I'd give anybody 5/1 Monty will pick Harrington if he's not qualified and is fit to play........

3 time major champion, and ex playing partner of Monty......

minimum bets off €100 accepted.....no prob;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,910 ✭✭✭✭whatawaster

Harrington's the best European golfer of the last 10 years

He's far from playing terribly, he's just outside the automatic places on both lists.

Unless he has a disastrous run of form, he's a 100% certain pick.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,990 ✭✭✭Trampas

Looks like Jimenez is a cert in the team now.

Molinari must be close to the top 9 now

Completely agree. He has been woeful in the format and if I was captain he wouldn't be getting a pick.

Edoardo Molinari knocking on the door at the moment.

I say he will have a great chance of making the squad with his brother looking good for an auto spot.

They should be good together in doubles. (Winning World Cup last year).

McGowan still in the squad. He isn't playing well this year at all 1 top 10.

I hope he doesn't make the squad.

In my opinion if anyone who is near the squad and doesn't turn up to events shouldn't be considered for a wild card spot

Likewise, don't think he will either. I hope to god Luke Donald plays his way in.
This is a good time for European Golf and Monty will be spoiled for choice.

My bet is padraig plays his way in now, and the 3 captains picks are casey, rose and e molinari.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,729 ✭✭✭Speak Now

Kaymer's win would have moved Harrington into the team only for casey's finish.
Donald pushed out a place on world points list so Kaymers spot on other list rolls down to casey.

If Harrington was serious about the ryder cup he would be in scotland.

And should have played more than three times in Europe this year, a point Ewen Murray also made to Butch Harmon during this weekend.

    Ditto for Jimenez,Casey,Donald and Rose.

Prize fund is less than half of the Irish open.

First prize in the Barclays is pretty much the whole purse in the Johnnie Walker.

These guys can talk all they wish about loving the Ryder come but cash is king when it comes to making their schedules and i don't believe the Ryder cup means the same to the current guys as it did back in the 80/90's.

Having said that there has to be 3 wildcards assuming current 9 doesn't change i reckon it's 3 of Donald,E.Molinari,Harrington and Rose.
Harrington won't be the one missing out imo.
