Shure SM58-s crackling problem...

Hey guys, I've a problem with my 58 with switch. It's causing me huge problems.

I tried to use it for speech over the weekend on a dynacord powered mixer and it was fuzzy and unclear. I tried changing cables and nothing changed.

I have also tried it at home in my studio and it seemed fine. Then I turned phantom power on and I got a very loud high pitched buzzing and crackling in the mix. I checked the input and when I moved the cable, the microphone started popping audibly... This doesn't happen with my other 58 or any of my other mics and cables don't seem to effect it.

The xlr input was loose but I have tightened it by the screw at the side. There has been no change however. It's continuing to crackle and snap audibly when phantom power is on. I'm guessing the diaphragm is making this noise and that is seriously worrying.

I just resoldered all the connections and nothing has improved.

You don't need phantom power with a 58.

Sounds like a loose connection in the microphone to me, or at least somewhere in the chain.

The little pop of power will ususlly cause the mic to act like a loudspeaker an make noise btw.

Hey studiorat, unfortunately the desks and preamps I use only supply phantom power in chains. If I need to use phantom power, the 58 is effected when it shouldn't be. That's my biggest problem as it's leading to loud high pitched noise through the mic when it's on.

Also, the popping is quite loud, almost as loud as computer speakers, so I'm pretty convinced that the diaphragm is getting the brunt of 48V somehow.
