Hi all am really embarrassed by this hence anon post I placed an order for a new car and 500 deposit just before Christmas. I then had to cancel the car as I received a 10% pay cut. No probs rang the dealer and told them they said fine.

4 weeks ago dealer rang me again and I felt at the time we would be ok if we went ahead with the order. More fool me my wife now has unexpectedly had her hours cut and I don't think it would be a good idea to go ahead with the car sale.

House and family come before new car any help on how to explain this to garage please feel like a right fool at the moment and feel scared to make call.

Tell the truth, there is nothing more to it.

Don't see what the issue is, you cannot afford the car now, so ring and cancel it. When is the car due in?

There's no need to be scared, sure these days they will be hearing similar stories probably on a near-weekly basis.

Just ring them SOON. Don't keep putting it off because that is messing them around. Do it first thing tomorrow, don't let it keep building up.

I understand about not wanting to pick up the phone, when it's something awkward or messy or complicated and you're not certain what the reaction will be - I HATE that stuff and put it off as long as possible. But it really isn't the right course to take. Just grab the phone and dial the number. You will be so relieved when you do and, of course, you will wonder why you were so worked up about it!

Just tell the truth , tell them you simply can't afford it and you need to cancel.

you could also say that you are very interested in the car and if/when you are in a better financial situation you'd be interested in buying it from that dealership. That way it'll keep the relationship good and hopefully get your deposit back.

Also call ASAP. the later you leave the harder it will be for the dealer to cancel it

You shouldn't feel shame for such trivial things!

I work in a motor dealers and trust me, we are getting calls like this all the time. We have had people like yourself who have had paycuts and hours cut, we have had people who have lost their jobs and we have had people that cancel the deal because they can't get the finance. Trust me, the sales person won't bat an eyelid and you shouldn't have any trouble getting your deposit back.

Please call the garage asap, you are actually doing them a dis-service by letting it drag on. They could have other potential customers for that car that they are losing out on because they consider it sold. Do yourself and them a favour and call them on Monday, that way they still might get it sold in the 1st quarter of the year (most main manufacturers offer bonuses for cars sold in 1st quarter).
