    Hi all

Why does the Irish Army set a upper age limit of 25 years old for people joining. The British and American military upper age limits are both over 30.

It seems to be because they're small enough that they get far more applicants than places and so they have pretty strict criteria to narrow the numbers applying. They also have stricter rules on eyesight, hearing and health than other nations.

It makes sense, to be honest. Why take in a 30 year old when you can take some 10 years younger and get him at his prime.

aye but what if the thirty year old is fit and healthy and got great eyesight and nothing wrong with them. they've got nothing to lose because they can still reject an unsuitable candidate, whereas an excellent overage candidate might slip through the net.

True, but they must believe that they can get enough quality applicants within the guidelines. It's just an easy way of pruning the candidates so they don't have to interview as many people. Of course, people 25+ can be excellent soldiers. The Defence Forces just doesn't need them.

The army age limit was lowered because the average age of an Irish serving soldier was too high when compared to other countries.
