    Hi folks,

I currently have an assignment in relation to copyright and the internet. Just wondering if anyone has any resources on the topic? I have the usual books etc but on the off chance that someone has a related webpage/article i thought i'd post.

    Regards.

I'm sure David (in Dublin) and Rory (in Cork) would not be too impressed with you trawling msg boards for answers to YOUR assignment.

There are plenty of web resources on this topic area. Do you have more specifics?

Oxford journals have a wide range of journals in their database on the subject, though you'll have to be a little more specific...

The assignment is to "discuss the ambit of copyright protection and regulation of the internet" using international material and not solely focusing on copyright.

I have quite a bit of material already but for what seemed at the begining to be quite broad topic, on research it seems to be narrow enough!

I will check oxford journals and if anyone has any notes they are willing to pass on i would be grateful!

That's a huge question. I know there were a few PhD students in UCC working on this topic and they published a lot of their work online.

If I was doing this, I would look at the Sabam v Tiscali case with reference to the Music Rights Holder v eircom/UPC cases pending in the Irish Courts. Or I would do the case of Ryanair v Bravofly in relation to screenscraping.

In the latter case I'd be very wary of the Directive on the Protection of Databases and Part V of the Copyright and Related Rights Act 2000.

I don't agree with you entirely on that front but .... there is case law in support of the concept of measured trespass [to chattels] .... William Hill v BHB and Frontiers Marketing. Not saying the Directive is perfect, but it is extant ;)

In the EU, databases can be protected under national laws implementing the sui generis right created by the EU Database Directive of 1996 (Directive 96/9/EC.).

As said above, I don't see how you could be lacking in information for this unless you're behind with your research skills?

I'm doing my thesis solely on music copyright infringement online and have more than enough sources

    Thanks for info guys.

Jev/N your right in one sense, my knowledge on the topic is lacking at the moment but the assignment is not due for over a month so im the early bird this time. Just trying to gather any resources people had before i start reading properly!

Best way to do it I think is to take a look at the subject generally first, go through the relevant chapters in a good IP book, and then you can have a think about exactly what it is you want to say. I find that with broad questions like this you need to have a structure in mind. You have to come at it from your own angle really, I mean the cases provided by Tom Young are just drops in the ocean.

Once you have a knowledge of the area generally you can think more clearly about where you want to go with your research.

Course they are ;) but the issue with this area is finding something relevant and potentially about to be litigated or decided upon Adwords perhaps! :)
