Potential Passport Problem

Hi there, I am in need of a new passport as I need to travel soon, to London, for a day or two.

I thought I had an old passport, long since expired, which I was going to use when getting my new one.

But when I went to get it, I couldn't find it. It is believed to have been burned in an old bag of trash by accident.

I have now been told I might have difficulties getting a new one on account of this. Is there any truth. I got my original in 2005 so I have forgotten the routine. I understand I need my birth cert and some photos....my birth cert is a bit tatty, and I dont have any other photo ID. Thanks.

Would be grateful for any advice on the matter. Thanks.
