Lost My Old Passport.....Might Have Trouble Getting A New One.

Hi there, I am in need of a new passport as I need to travel soon, to London, for a day or two.

I thought I had an old passport, long since expired, which I was going to use when getting my new one.

But when I went to get it, I couldn't find it. It is believed to have been burned in an old bag of trash by accident.

I have now been told I might have difficulties getting a new one on account of this. Is there any truth. I got my original in 2005 so I have forgotten the routine.

Would be grateful for any advice on the matter. Thanks.

You said you got your original in 2005. Is that a typo? Should it be 1995?

    From the Passport Office website:
    http://www.dfa.ie/home/index.aspx?id=261
"If you have a poor passport record, ie have lost two or more passports, it is likely that only very limited passport facilities will be given for specific travel purposes."

So, you should not have any problem as you have only lost one.

The full text of that webpage is below:

"What to do if you have lost your most recent passport or had it stolen.
The Passport Office, in accordance with EU regulations in relation to reported lost or stolen passports, is now advising international authorities, through Interpol, of all passports reported to the Passport Office as having been lost or stolen.
Any passport that is reported as lost or stolen is no longer a valid travel document.
If it is recovered, it should be returned to the Passport Office for cancellation. Care should be taken to avoid its use for travel purposes
If you lose your passport, or if it is stolen, you should immediately report the loss to the Passport Office or your nearest Irish Embassy or Consulate. You will be asked to confirm this in writing, or if you are applying for a new passport to include the details along with your passport application.
To obtain a new passport you should complete a passport application form [APS1 if resident in the State, APS2 if resident elsewhere]. This should be witnessed by a member of An Garda Síochána if you are resident in the State or by one of the eligible witnesses listed on the APS2 form if you live elsewhere. The application form includes a section [Section 6 - Statement of Loss] to enable you to provide details or the circumstances of the loss of the passport. You should provide a full explanation of the circumstances.
When applying for your new passport you must resubmit your documents showing your proof of citizenship as if you were applying for the first time, eg Birth Certificate and marriage certificate, if applicable.
If you have a poor passport record, ie have lost two or more passports, it is likely that only very limited passport facilities will be given for specific travel purposes. On each occasion on which a passport is issued, even when this is a limited validity passport, the full passport fee will be payable.

Remember: Your passport is a valuable document so keep it in a safe place while you are at home and look after it carefully when you are travelling."

check here for what you need to do

    http://www.dfa.ie/home/index.aspx?id=261

do you not have a driving license? you don't need a passport to travel to the UK.

As you will see from the link it's a little more complicated having lost a passport, and with the work to rule in the passport office you should get cracking asap.

No difficulty as such (unles it's happened a few times), but you will have to report the passport as lost to the police - there is a section on the application form about this, explained in the accompanying guide.

go to your local garda station (with ID if they dont know you) and report it lost - fill out form, get garda to stamp and apply for new passport - mite be best to go to the pastport office in person as the are having some sort of strike/go slow at the mo, so if u can spare the time, go in there in person and wait it out.

Is this a regular passport form or some sort of a new one viz. lost passports?

Who stocks these forms? The Garda or the Post Office?

    Thanks for your time.

It's the regular form, you can get them at the Gardaí and the Post Office. There is a section on the second page that you complete when you've lost a passport. You might need to send in your original birth cert if you don't have an older passport as proof of ID/being Irish.

If you've the time, your best bet is to go through the 10 day guarantee with the Post Office, but include a copy of whatever tickets you've booked.
