It's a tough course I hear, but worth it if you can get your teeth into it.

More than half the current first years re-applying to the CAO in the hope of getting medicine !

you gotta remember that especially in cork, anyone who wants to do med really just wants to stay in cork, so they put dentistry second. that's why demand is so high now.
the course is hard alright, we've had a few doctors come back and do dentistry who've all felt that dentistry was harder, but that was just an opinion. the emphasis on practical work in the later years is what'll shape you, and as long as you can back up anything you say you'll be fine.
the first couple of years are pretty intense though. it'll feel like you're not doing anything relevant at all but it still has to be done.
you're pretty much guaranteed a job after, and won't suffer in the early years like junior doctors. you can take holidays pretty much when you want, but you have to remember that you don't earn anything then!!
if you want to specialise, then it'll be at least a couple of more years depending on what you do.
ask your local dentist if you can watch for a few days to get a feel on how it works in the real world.

i put down dentistry as my first choice and i think i want to do it but im not fully sure.
The way some lecturer was talking about it at the open day would put anyone off as he made it sound so boring. And do people just see it as a course that people who dont get med do

in cork, especially yes. i'd safely say at least half my class wanted to do med, although they only put down med in cork. this was in the last days of bonus points for higher maths, so they could easily have gotten med in ucd if they put that down too.
do you remember who the lecturer was? the only ones that really matter are the crowd in the dental hospital, and they're pretty sound. they'll at least know your name, whereas the first couple of years you're just a number. i'd have no problem doing it again. although i'd never get the points for it anymore!

hi Alice, I'm in final dent at the moment. The course is pretty hard alright and definately a lot of hours have to be put in. But if you like it (which I know is an impossible question right now) its fantastic. I'd say if you're good at figuring out problems and as ballysmchugh said able to back up any decision you take you're sorted (also have some bit of dexterity with your hands :D). If you ever want to take a look around the dental hospital you can pm me.
