MGB Hood Replacement

I was wondering what supplier any of you have used to replace your MGB Roadsters (or other roadsters) hoods. I’ve been researching and there seems to be quite a few different sources at varying prices. I want the best fitting one I can get but on a budget.

These guys Prestige Hoods seem to say all the right things, but does anyone have experience with them or their products? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MGB-1962-1980-Hood-Hoods-Soft-Top-Tops-Roof_W0QQitemZ310203167761

MGB Hive seems to have hoods varying from £139 to £360 and MGOC spares from £139 to £560 but I’m not entirely sure of the differences between them all. I.e. how does a vinyl hood compare to some of the more pricey cloth or Mohair ones?

I’m a bit lost as to what I should be looking for. The car is a 1971. The car will be garaged most of the time and only really used on good days when the hood is likely to be down, so I guess what I’m looking for is a good fitting hood that folds well and will last.

    Thanks,
    John

I bought a mohair one from Prestige about 10 years ago to replace a poor quality vinyl on on my Merc SL.

It was high quality and still looks perfect.

To be honest I dunno anything about the MG one but there can be a lot in fitting. You could make a cheap hood look great or a good one look bad depending on who is fitting.

Try Duffy Auto Trim in Dublin, they may recommend one, and quote for fitting it.

Cheers guys, I’ll like to give them both a call and see what they recommend, but that might be a bit cheeky as I reckon I’m going to fit it myself. There doesn’t seem to be much to it - certainly a lot less complex than other soft tops I have seen.

I’m really surprised how little detail I can find on the internet though about fitting them considering that all MGB’s by this stage are likely to have seen at least one replacement. There are a few youtube videos and some how-to guides on USA sites, but very little conversation about specific manufacturer’s product on the UK sites that I’ve found thus far.

    Hi John,
did you get a hood yet? I'm also looking for a new hood, the old one the windows are gone yellow, I've also got a targa style hardtop, what year is the mg?

    Hi Derby,

Nope I haven't picked it up yet, but Im pretty sure I'm going for HZA5123 as listed in the Moss catalogue here It seems very close to the original design, but with the addition of a zipped rear window. Mine's a 71 but this hood will fit fine too. I've been looking at the hard tops, some of them are really nice and Im amased at how cheap they can be picked up in the UK new or used.

    Hey John

For what its worth. If you are only going to use the car on dry days and holy ones, then if I were you I"d go for the cheap option.Fitting fancy Mohair and DD hoods are a waste of money IMHO.You need have no fear insofar as fitting a hood yourself. All these kits come with step by step instructions , and if you take your time and do the job in WARM conditions then dont be afraid and go for it!!!

Cheers mountai, yep it will definitely just be a vinyl hood going on it as it will be rarely used with the hood up anyway. I’m still just trying to pick the right one, there seems to be so many different vinyl hoods available at wildly differing prices.
