Just wondering about cleaning the sparkler.

Is it bad to get your ring cleaned too often? I know when you leave it ifn they check the setting when they clean it for you

But what about cleaning it yourself at home, given the 'current economic climate'?:p But I bought that cleaning agent for cleaning golds and precious stones from the jewellers and am wondering how often can you use it?

I know about putting it in coke cola , washing up liquid, window cleaner toothpaste even & carefully with small brush etc etc

(My ring is a platnium gold ring with diamonds)

I brought my ring in to be cleaned on Sat and the jeweller gave me some tips to clean it myself. He said to put some warm water and tiny bit of fairy liquid in a bowl (DON'T CLEAN YOUR RING AT THE SINK!!) and rinse the ring with it and if you have an old soft toothbrush clean inside the prongs and underneath the diamond, then rinse with cold water.

I would say that would work well with a little drop of windolene in the water too.....

I was just in the jewellers the other day buying my wedding rings, and she said that it's not good for rings to be cleaned too often. I use the fairy liquid in a bowl of warm water whenever mine gets dirty and it works a treat!

That's the advice I always give people... especially the sink part (in case you dislodge a stone, which can happen occasionally. At least if you have the stone it can be reset without costing a fortune).

I've never used the coke, but I'd say it would leave the ring very sticky! Gin is the other old wives tale one!!

For those Aldi lovers (and Maplin), they sometimes sell Ultrasonic Cleaners. These are machines used by a lot of jewellers, and can be used for cleaning CDs/DVDs too. However, read the instructions carefully; you should NEVER use them for emeralds, pearls, opals and several other stones (the machine should have a list in the instructions). Also, it anything is loose in the ring, then the machine may well knock it out; I'll always say that it's better to lose it in the machine so that you still have it than on the street where it will probably be lost forever. (Stones falling out will usually be the result of puulled, broken or worn claws).

    Hope this helps.

    David.

H Samuel sell a 'jewel cleaner' liquid. You drop the diamond ring into it, leave for a while and then I use a battery tooth brush to give a good scrub.
