The other half has a 99 Opel Astra when she is driving along with no heat on the temperature gauge goes to about half as normal put when she turns on the heat it goes way down. If she then stops in traffic it goes back to normal and when she drives again it goes back down.

Any one any ideas what is wrong? Thanks for your help.

Sounds like the thermostat is stuck open. It's worth buying and fitting a new one since they are cheap enough and it's an easy job.

Apart from the car being uncomfortable on cold mornings, you're probably using extra petrol too, because the engine is taking longer to heat up...
