Getting a new passport & changing the spelling of your name

    Hey all,
I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with changing the spelling of their name and subsequently applying for a new passport?

I need to renew my 10 years passport fairly quick as it runs out soon and I need to apply for a J1 visa, however at the same time I wish to change the spelling of my first name - it's a very simple change, just adding 1 letter and that's all.
For example, my current name on my birth cert is Ann Bloggs, I want to change it to Anne Bloggs.

On the citizens information website, I read that ""if the version of the name to be entered on the passport differs from the version of the name on the birth certificate, you must provide evidence of usage for at least two years, e.g. bank statement, driving licence, credit cards, etc. At least two examples of such evidence should be enclosed with your application"".

I will be changing the spelling by means of deed poll, is I do this, do this mean that technically the name on my birth cert is changed?
Also, I have been using the new spelling that I want on bank details for years, so would this constitute enough proof that I have been using for it for 2 years, even though it was not officially changed?

Sorry if this reads very complicated, but its something that I need to get sorted asap and I said I'd post here to see if anyone has any experience with the process, I know that there is industrial action in the passport office at the moment, so don't know how much info I'll be able to get from there.

    Many thanks!!

You can get the name on your passport changed, however you may need to get the deed poll signed off by the courts first. This is mostly a formality and your solicitor can inform you. My brother and a friend have both done this. The old name is noted on the passport.

Your birth cert is always your birth cert.

Be aware that you may need to make declarations for any future use of your qualifications.

Any problems, just drop into the Israeli Embassy.* :pac:

    * This is a joke of dubious ethical and joke qualities. Do not go to the Israeli Embassy.

That's great, thanks for the info!

Haha, actually the Isreali embassy saw this post and offered to pay for the new passport, all they want is a photocopy of it, bargain methinks! (Joke..)
