When will the rugby authorities cop on and proudly use our National Anthem like in all other sports instead of the meaningless Phil Coulter rubbish thing. It's an insult and embarrassment to Ireland and our sporting heroes. Imagine that garbage being played on All Ireland final day or before a soccer international. Makes me and thousands others cringe.

    *sigh*

because we play as the island of Ireland. not the republic of Ireland.

How would you like if they played Our National Anthem, and then God save the Queen?

    Irelands call is a comprimise

(its still a crap song :p)

Because the Irish team represents all of Ireland, not just the Republic, part of which includes Northern Ireland, which is part of the UK.

Why play in green so, or why call themselves Ireland. Why not UK and Ireland so. Why the compromise? We always have to bend over to keep someone happy

Agree, but some say Amhrán na bhFiann is the national athem for the Republic of Ireland and that the rugby team represents all of the island of Ireland. (Rubbish)
The thing that really annoys me is at home games they play both, yet when Ireland play in the North or abroad they play only Irelands call.

    I'll Bite (Its 2.20am)

    1. We play as the island of Ireland. Not the Republic of Ireland, not Northern Ireland, not Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, But As the Island of Ireland.

    2. Its hardly that have to keep people happy, the IRFU was founded Long before the Foundation of the state (1886)

Ok for a start, the island is called Ireland and its split into northern and republic, thats why its called ireland and not the uk and Ireland.
In soccer, both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland play in green. Also you should know that at home games they play both Irelands call and Amhrán na bhFiann.
I personally like the song, but hey each to their own!

The island of Ireland has always been called "Ireland". "Ireland", as the name of the rugby team, refers to the geographic location the team represents, not the political states that occupy this location.

Green has always been the colour Ireland has played in, since the 1800s, when the IRFU was established and all of Ireland was part of the UK.

Feel free to correct me, but when Amhrán na bhFiann is played at home games, its Known as the Presidential Salute, for the President

    /me corrects you.

The presidential salute is a few bars from Amhran na bhFiann, which is played when the president walks out to meet the players (before the anthems).

Amhran na bhFiann is in fact played before Ireland's Call during the anthems at home games.

Yes when the President comes out the meet the players (first four bars of the national anthem immediately followed by the last five.)
    But played in full later.
Because the Irish team represents all of Ireland, not just the Republic, part of which includes Northern Ireland, which is part of the UK.
Then how come the GAA insist on Amhrán na bhFiann at a Down v. Tyrone football game?

Ah its too late, I'm going to bed......

Because the GAA is rightly or wrongly entwined with politics and Republicanism.

It is contested that this practice alienates Unionist communities in the North from Gaelic Games.

Well let's be honest about it. It's to keep the tans in the IRFU happy. That's north and south by the way, plenty down here would like to see us playing God Save the Queen.

There's a few other f**king stupid things. One that pops to mind is one Ulster born player having to be on the pitch at all times. Doesn't matter how rubbish he is there has to be one.

Is that so? You are wrong my friend, very very very wrong. That is just utter paranoia and we shouldn't even be discussing this anymore as its been discussed to death already and only leads to insults/fighting/bitching/moaning, things that sadly drag this forum into the pits now and then. Players are picked on form, merit, necessity, what have you. Never has a player been picked just to fill some imaginary quota set by whoever. This isn't South Africa.

Otherwise i would like to hear you flesh out your opinion a bit more as iv'e heard this tripe from a few "fans" over the years yet they never back themselves up with facts.

Hey chupacabra will have a look for it.

It was a clause in the contract of Eddie OSullivan. Will have a look for the source, it's either his autobiography or an interview he did on newstalk.

I think there are some fine players in Ulster but to have a rule saying that at least one should be in is ridiculous. Seriously did there ever need to be a clause for David Humphries to get in to the squad.

    Will get back to ya.

Apart from the act that "Ireland's Call" is not voted by us as a National Anthem, yet is played abroad with the Irish tri-colour as if it were some kind of official tune. The song is smelly s-h-i-t-e of many different colours.

Amhrán na bhFiannn is the Irish National Anthem and I get angry when it is disrepected or when the tri-colour is disrespected.
A step too far in my opinion, but I don't follow rugby so my blood pressure is quite good to be honest.

true, but the whole 32-county Ireland thing attracted me.
Unlike most Rugby supporters. VOTE UNIONIST !

Discussing the anthems is expressly forbidden in the forum's charter because it leads to rubbish threads like this which have bugger all to do with rugby and more to do with thub-thumping quasi-political nonsense. Thread will be reviewed.

**Review complete: eirekevin, BehindTheScenes, fuelinjection banned. Two Weeks.**

    Let me make it absolutely clear to all involved, this is a forum for the discussion of the game of RUGBY UNION. The clue is in the title. Using the forum to air tired quasi-political nonsense like the dreaded 'anthem discussion' is totally unacceptable on a number of levels. This includes the fact that;

The charter expressly forbids the discussion of the anthems because we end up with threads which rapidly deteriorate into drivel like this.

The charter also makes it clear that the injection of sectarian politics into the forum will not be tolerated.

This thread also clearly violates the 'Don't be a dick" golden rule.

Any future threads of this ilk and the bans will be considerably longer.
