Please let someone be able to help me here ...
The hard drive on my laptop fried a couple of weeks ago and I managed to get it repaired but I had to reinstall everything... I installed itunes again and when I plugged in my ipod it told me it was synced to another library and wanted to know if i wanted to erase and synch ... NO !!!!
anyway, i followed instructions on how to get my music from my ipod back on to my laptop. The final part of the insturctions were to "select File, Add Folder to Library, and select the folder where you copied the files from your iPod. Alternatively, just drag and drop this folder onto iTunes" . Sounds fairly straightforward but I can't do it ... can someone please tell me how to pair my ipod with my laptop again ... It's a 16gb and nearly full - I'll cry if I have to do it all again !!!!!!!!
    thanks in advance

So you've got your music back on your laptop itself, but you can't get it into the iTunes library - is that correct?

I didn't think it was possible to copy all your music from your iPhone into iTunes (except for stuff you've purchased through the iTunes store). I've hit this problem before when I've formatted my computer and hooked up iTunes again and it wants to try and erase my iPhone and copy everything back onto it

It's not possible through iTunes itself but it is achievable using third-party software.

Google "iPod to iTunes" Or simialr and you'll get a flavour of the type of programs available.

Somebody may be able to recommend a decent free one here as well.

    This is all you need

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/podlift/

PodLift allows the user to browse and listen to all tracks and playlists on an iPod or iPhone, and transfer them to iTunes and/or their hard drive. PodLift 4.0 beta is an open source version of the existing PodLift freeware application.

    Hi Keane,

Yes I have it back on my laptop - it's in hidden files but it's there ... I went to the apple ipod chat/forum and searched for syncing with new library and it borught up a couple of links re disaster recovery. Anyway I followed the instructions and have now managed to get the hidden files back onto my laptop but not onto itunes ... any ideas ???

I would suggest redoing the ipod to laptop transfer with the software package mentioned in the previous post.

If you just have the hidden folder with all the files having strange names and all that the files will be difficult to mange and get back into iTunes properly.

Most of the software packages rip the music from the iPod with the proper names, artist tags etc intact. I think you ought to try this step again using one of those programs because it should then be a simple drag and drop job to get the music back into iTunes.

I suspect with the hidden folders contents it will be more difficult...

Thanks lads ... I'll give this a go this evening ... I'm a bit clueless when it comes to all things technical in that if it doesn't work when I turn it on It's too complicated but as I've put so much effort into getting the files onto my ipod in the first place I better make an effort .. !!
    fingers crossed ...

Yeah don't worry, this should be a reasonably easy problem to solve so just give what I've suggested a bash there and come back and let us now the result.

I did this for a friends iPhone. I bought iPod copy from http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy/index.php
it's 25 dollars. Plug in you iPhone/touch/iPod, open the software. Select all the music video, click on copy to iTunes. It copies everything onto your pc and adds to the iTunes library. When all is copied, sync your iPod again in iTunes, accept it will delete everything, then let it copy back from your pc to iPhone

just takes time, no need to know much about it!!

The software that Nulabert recommended seems to do the job. I re-formatted my PC last night and re-installed Windows so I had to get past that issue with the iTunes being sync'd to another library crap. I just used that software, it copied everything to my iTunes library, then I just chose the option and let it erase the music on the iPhone, and then I just copied everything back on. A bit cumbersome but it worked.

I also tried the iPodLift software. It was very buggy, throwing up error messages left, right and centre. It also seemed to miss quite a few tracks.
