Hi well ive currently looking at buying a new car as the head gasket went in my old astra but i was looking at 2008 skoda octavia vrs, volvo s40 and a mazda 6 all 2.0 litre diesels but with the scrappage deals i can get a brand new mistsubishi lancer for less money, im just wondering does the lancer have much poke? i know it say 1.5 mivec but im not so sure. Plus is it a good car to drive? reliable etc.

    Thanks

Doesn't sound great tbh. Haven't heard anything particularly amazing about these cars. If I were you I'd much rather have the S40

Lancers are reliable but they are not that popular these days in Ireland as they were years ago. No real comparision between a 1.5 litre petrol Lancer and the others you mention as they are all really different type cars.

Really depends on what you want from a car and what kind of use you will give it.

I had an 09 Lancer. I enjoyed it as it was my first new car. I thought it was also the best looking compared to the other similar priced cars I was looking at.

Yeh nd how did u find the engine. does it have any power at all? just 1.5 for a car that size does seem to be a fairly small engine.

Yeh stange that i used to be a big fan of the old galant used to loads of colts around to but there gone a very rare car to see on the roads and as far as i know theyve alway been known as a reliable car.

I thought i did have some poke but just to let you know that the only other car I was used to before that was an 02 Almera so you could say anything would be more powerful than that. It had some poke i thought though

Basically they were terrible at handling the European market. Either they don't have the resources or just don't care about us.

The Carisma was a naff car (also the GDI engines were not reliable) and had no hope of ever becoming popular due to being so painfully bland.

They let the Colt (Mirage-based), Lancer, Space Wagon and Galant go into old age and fall well behind the competition. The facelifted Lancer was too little too late - it came out in Japan in 2000, but when did we get it? 2004? 2005? Completely outdated by then. Galant died a death with nothing to replace it. Newer Space Wagon and the Grandis are nothing special either.

They had no supermini until the new Colt in 2004 - a perfectly competent car (the only decent thing to come out of the DaimlerChrysler alliance), but due to complete lack of publicity (and poor dealer network?) barely anyone seems to even know it exists.

The Colt/Lancer/Galant and Pajero were big sellers here in the early 1990s. The Galant got bigger to allow the poor Carisma to slot in between it and the Lancer. Poor model structure, marketing and reduced dealer network.

In a country where you were taxed more on larger engines the Galant became redundant. The Carisma was aimed at the Mondeo/Avensis/Primera segment despite being not much bigger than the Lancer. The Colt/Lancer were not updated for almost 10 years meaning they were blown away by the competition. When they were updated they were still lagging behind.

The Pajero became too expensive and the Land Cruiser became the favorite weapon of farmers and builders. Mitsubishi seemed to take their eye off the ball in recent years to concentrate on marketting the Evo.

The new Lancer is nicely styled but it has a limited model line up and the competition offers so much choice these days that the Lancer just doesn't stand apart from them. The Focus/Astra and Golf are too strong for the Lancer.

My father had one for 8yrs and it never gave him an ounce of trouble.

It is a light car with a 1.3L or 1.6L engine.

As its a Jap they dont give problems......very reliable

The new Lancer is a very good car. The MIVEC ayatem isn't the same high revving stuff you'd get on a Cyborg or FTO, it's more like iVTEC or VVT-i (more geared towards fuel economy and torque rather than outright power) Should be called Diet MIVEC.

I think, visually it has more presence than something like a Corolla or Focus saloon

RE: why there aren't more Mitsus on the road, I think they were in serious trouble in the 90's and let a lot of their stuff go past its sell by dates, also ideas like the Space Star and Carisma to be built in Europe weren't that well thought out. Mitsu had a new model (the one we got in 04) Lancer in Japan in 00 which was superior to the Carisma. Mitsubishi didn't bring it out in Europe to protect the locally built Carisma. So the Colt and Lancer soldiered on till 2003 despite themselves being reskinned early 90s cars.

In Ireland, they never had the advertising apend, dealer presence or dealer quality that the likes of Toyota and Ford enjoy, so no matter how good the cars were, nobody knew.

The Galant was a large FWD*, 4 cylinder* Japanese saloon*, which is very unfashionable in Europe. Generally you'd need to be RWD/4WD, 6 cylinder and German to suceed. The Camry is one of Toyotas global big sellers, but it bombs in Europe and isn't even on sale in Ireland anymore.
Look at what happened the Ford Scorpio, Opel Omega, Peugeot 607, Renault Safrane etc.

    *mostly

I'd say that Mitsubishi sales were up quite a bit since the new Lancer was introduced. Nice looking car - something which the old ones were not. The old models were very bland.

Hopefully getting their asses in gear again. The Galant was a lovely car to drive or be a passanger in.

It's a pity the Lancer doesn't come in 1.8L petrol. 1.5L seems a bit underpowered alright.

You can get the VW 2.0 140bhp diesel (also fitted to the Grandis and Outlander) in the UK.
(only available in the far-less-nice sportback body style). It'll do 0-60 in 9.6 seconds, which is nice.

Quick figures, Emissions are 165 g/km so 430 a year tax (ouch)
    Emissions band D
VRT would 24% (roughly 5500 quid.)
The list price in the UK is 16500, say 15500 straight.
That's 17200 yoyos plus the vat difference (17712)
Add the VRT, that's 23200 plus travel.
Good enough spec on them too but the tax is a bit of a killer.
