Micra gear change problem

The gear change in our 03 Nissan Micra has become extremely stiff. ( The car was left idle for several months ) Ther are 2 cables from the gear stick to the gearbox and I am told here is where the problem lies. The replacement cost of this unit is over €500 plus fitting. Has anybody come across this problem or know of any…
