[C&C] Cropping stamp out of image

Unfortunately I was without my camera when I was provided with a wonderful opportunity to take photos of dramatic clouds this weekend. I borrowed a friend's point & shoot on which I couldn't figure out how to stop the date/time stamp from showing up in the photos.

How would you remove the stamp? Here's my effort (I cropped it, but lost vital foreground interest!).

Instead of cropping, did you consider cloning the date time stamp out?

In Photoshop I would use the Healing brush.

If you made the original available, I would not mind taking a crack at it.

I tried it before in GIMP with another image but found it very difficult.

I believe I've given it a Creative Commons license now so it is available to download (I'm not too sure of the etiquette etc...) Thanks!

The foreground interest isn't particularly interesting though, so you might be able to straighten the horizon, then crop almost completely, leaving a small strip of horizon along the bottom just to ground the clouds a bit.

Using the cloning tool in Fireworks, should be the same for most software packages...

Surely those time stamps are redundant nowadays; you can usually check EXIF if you want to know when it was taken. They're so intrusive.

That's a fantastic job Foto Joe! I'll use that as a benchmark as I learn how to do it myself. Did you find that easy in comparison to other photos on which you've used the cloning tool?

Yeah that's a handy one for cloning with that ground cover. Just keep changing your clone source so you can't see repeated patterns... and don't clone any prominatent features as they'll stick out. Oh and follow and line of gradients. That was just a quick job, you can spot one or two repeated patterns.
