Interview!

    Hi all,

I got a letter to attend for a Mature Student entry interview the other day and was wondering if anyone could help me out.

    1) The interview is on the 15th of March, is that a reading/mid term week in Maynooth? Because from what I have read on here parking will be impossible on campus if it is a normal week.

    2) Might sound like a stupid question, but what kind of dress code would the interview have? Should I treat it like a job interview or be a bit more relaxed?

    3) I don't tend to do well in interview situations and actually feel nervous about it so if anyone could provide any tips I would be really grateful.

    Thanks

    1) Reading/study week is that week so parking will be no problem.

    2) I'd say go for smart casual. Decent jeans and a nice shirt(I'm assuming your a fella). Who's the interview with? Someone on here might know better if you can tell us who it is.

    3) Never had an interview in my life so can't help there. Best advice from me would be to know your stuff. :p

Be prepared for questions on how you are going to fund yourself. They will want to make sure you have thought the whole thing through properly. Check out studentfinance.ie for this.

Also have your subjects/course picked out and have an example of a job/careeer you would like to get from the degree.

I think they try and weed out the people who aren't really serious about going back to university.

I have an interview too really soon, I'm hoping to do an arts degree so any tips or advice anyone could give me for it would be very much appreciated.

You will have no problem parking but try and park on the same campus as your interview. No point arriving windswept / sodden / frozen.:)

Be prepared to answer questions about how you will finance yourself and that you have sorted out childcare arrangements. Other than that it will be the usual stuff about how did you get to the point of wanting to get a place on this course.

I agree with Irish goat on the smart casual look.

Good luck, its a great college.

    HI
The interview is grand, as already stated they will ask questions about financing yourself. Also they like to know that you can use computers and emphasis anything educational you have done since finishing school. Also if you know what subjects you want to do as part of the arts degree point this out as it will show you are going back with purpose not just for something to do. Sorry if this post is a bit long as it is my first.

Hey I'm going for an interview at the end of the month for Business and Management course as a mature student.

I dont do well in interviews so apart from the obvious questions like how am i going to finance the whole course and what made me decide to become a mature student/pick this course, is there anything else i need to have an answer ready for?

I completely agree. If you have a genuine interest in a particular field of study, say so! They want to see that you're interested more in contributing to the subject than just in going back to college for the sake of it. Share any knowledge of the field and any experience you have in the subject with them (I.E. if you're applying for French, mention if you lived in France for a time, or speak any French you might know. ''Sometimes I watch TV Sanc with the sound down and it looks grand'' won't cut it''.

Don't be too intimidated either. They want you to do well, and they don't bite.

    Best of luck!

Got a letter today saying I have been accepted for a place next year, just want to say thanks to everyone for the advice. Also have two entrance exams for this Saturday for different courses is it worthwhile still going along to them?
