    Hi

Hoping someone can advise me on this.

I really want to qualify as an accountant but I'm not too sure on the way around it.

From what I understand, it's generally a 3 year course where you will obtain your FE's (I think this is the qualification)

I was also told that you need to have 3 year Accounts working experience. Can someone explain this?

Can this be done simultaneously as in study while working in an Accounts Dept? Does it need to be a specific accounts area?

Also where offers the best course / opportunity to pursue this. I obviously want a qualification that is recognisable.

Is there any way to acheive this sooner? I guess I have basic understanding of accounting but am prepared to work towards acheiving this and would like to do this in the shortest space of time.

I'm just at a loss with where to look, where offers recognisable qualifications, how to get the experience - Do any companies offer paid training packages, where you work and study accounting with them.

    Thanks a lot!

    Hi Nojunkmail

there are a few different routes into accounting, your first step should be checking out the various accounting bodies, CPA, ACCA, ICAI, CIMA and so on.

i took the route of firstly going for a technician qualification-with IATI, ACCA also do a technician level called CAT. this is a stand alone qualification that you can build on with more exams to reach a fully qualified accountant stage. some of the final year exams can only be sat if you are already in an accounting role.

all the accounting bodies require work experience i think- this is 2-3 years, but you can gain this working while studying, however, if you are not already in a finance related area, the training contract in most accounting firms is low pay, so you need to factor in this, especially if you have a mortgage etc.

for the IATI, be prepared to put in an average of 12 to 15 hrs a week, with more coming up to exams - for IACI i think lectures are on weekends, so free time becomes limited, although some of the courses can be distance learned.

your previous studies may qualify you for exemptions, as does the IATI and CAT qualification in further accouting studies.

there is a sticky which lists all the different websites that you should check out
