    Hey all!
Just wondering whats yer opinions on VJing?! Played a 4 hour set in a bar last night and I was told when setting up that there system had changed! Im the traditional CD DJ but apparently all the other lads are using laptops and showing music video's at the same time! Personally I hate them...they just dont give me the same satisfaction as working with CD's.....its all a bit too easy!! I'm just wondering will this be the next big craze?? Is it hard to get into or what advice would ye give anyone staring the issue in the face??

    Cheers!!

I'm in a collaboration with a VJ, and it's great. Really adds another element to the set, and the crowd love it. I'd say get one of your mates who VJs to help you out instead of doing it yourself, would be easier and better.

Thanks for that!;) I know one of the other local DJ's mentioned it to me a while back! What sort of set up would I need or where could I look to get started if I decided to take up the "art";) myself???

My VJ uses a program called Isadora and a cheapo Korg Nanokontrol to control it, so you could get a laptop to run alongside your CDs with visuals, you don't need to do much work for the visuals, just set something up and leave it looping, and then if you've cued up a long track you could change the visuals a bit.

He just downloads nice videos from youtube, I'd say it'd be easy enough to do.

Thanks for that! Will have to look into it and read up a bit! (might be more work in this area than DJing) Not many people do it around here(mayo) then again not many places are set up for it!

bar owners are expecting the world for nothing,

they want music, lighting and vjing, wont pay extra or even alot more space that all these extra's clearly need.

Has anyone noticed that booths are getting smaller with every face lift of a venue. soon enough we'll all be working off a iphone just to allow some room
    for breathing etc.
god help you if you run serrato with 2 decks.

If you turned up with an A&H Xone:4D and a Macbook Pro, you'd get glared at for causing a fuss, not be complimented for having a sick set-up.

I find sometimes people just stand and stare at the visuals instead of dancing - I've done it myself - can be annoying.

Well in fairness to the owner where I was working the booth is ok....I mean ok not excellent:rolleyes: but at least I have space for 2 CDJ 1000's! Luckily I work with CD's only so I dont need space for a laptop too!
As regards money and payment if I only charged 20 euro it would be too much! Even though the place was packed with around 150 - 200 people he still used the "money isnt as plentiful now" excuse! Maybe its not but still my wages werent going to break the bank!...I know for a fact that anyone else would have taken 180 if not 200 for the 4 hours! Despite having a full house he still wanted a cut on the price!
I'd like to hear the opinion of any pub/club owners on here?!:D
I'm sure I'm not the only one thats getting more and more sick of venue's looking for discounts??

im starting to get into VJing at the min. i have a good bit of software and im just trying to build up all my footage now. if the club owner was interested i might be able to do visuals for the club the odd night but it would have to be worth my while money wise cos im in galway

everyone's trying to get more for their money these days
but i dont agree with club owners knocking acts down in price.
music is a small expenditure unless you're hiring in an international name.

Some owners love ball breaking not for the money but just for the joys of being a ball breaker.

plus they're still milking the punters, €7 for a rock shandy in a bar i played in last week, and there's no huge tax on soft drinks so it was pure rip off tactics.
people often joke its cheaper to drink than go on the soft drinks but this time
    it was actually true.

if we all start believing their sob stories then we'll end up racing to zero.
some gob-****e round here wanted people to pay €200 to enter into a DJ competition for limericks best DJ, I hope no-one was stupid enough to enter it.

Another thing, if you did 4 hours for the club using your gear and music, you probably spent time outside the club preparing, hence the higher rate that acts charge. if an electrician showed up and did 4 hours of repairs do you think he'd give a toss if money's tight for the owner, no. job done pay up!

Something that the boards could be used for is to set up a blacklist, name and shame venues that abuse performers, make it difficult for them to attract
acts that do a propper job, give other peeps the heads up of what to expect.
Any club that runs a month of timmy's first time outside his bedroom nights would soon know how scarce cash can be.

Thats a very good idea! Creating a list on this thing might be just whats needed! If its allowed I'd definitely be up for it! Have a few I'd love to get out in the open!;) Look into it and get back to me if you like??
