No overlay on new monitor via HDMI

Strange one this, and I can find no mention of it anywhere on the web - I got a brand new shiny monitor and connected it up via a HDMI cable. I'm now using a resolution of 1920 * 1080; my video drivers are the latest nvidia, as they were before. When I booted up, my screen and resolution were detected perfectly and everything looks fantastic, apart from the fact that I can't get any video output from xine/vlc/mplayer/tvtime. Video works OK in Flash, though. I assume it's some sort of overlay issue but have not found any relevant settings in the nvidia control panel or the players' settings.

    Any ideas?

Sound via HDMI doesn't work either, but I'm not unduly worried about that.
