    Hi,

At the moment i am currently studying in Ucc. I am a first year student and I'm having commitment issues with my course and there is another course i feel i would like to do more, but i am unsure. As of now I'm trying to decide whether I'm just being foolish and i should stick at it with my course and give it my all or switch now before I'm half way through second year and worrying even more about the issue. Still i don't know maybe things will change next year and i will feel more confident with my decision but that could just be some fantastical hope of mine. Also i am aware it would cost a lot of money to switch course, i don't know the exact cost but that also worries me and makes the decision even more daunting for me. Any advice on the issue is greatly appreciated.

I'd say see how the exams go for you! But if you're unhappy with it now, it's unlikely that that will change when you enter second year. I'd recommend asking those the years ahead of you in you're own course to see what it's like and also try asking people doing the course that you are interested in about what that is like! Also try talking to the first year coordinator in UCC, if you're unsure bout fees and stuff! Hope this helps! :)

It depends on the course but its usally around 3-5k. But to be honest it would be worth it instead of going through 3/4 years of a course you dont like and then to find you've left college with a degree for a job you don't want to do.

Follow your heart and it'll all work out.

I was in your exact position in 2nd year, everyone I know said to wait for the exams and see how they go, so I did and scraped though, but in second year things got way harder in the course and I hated the course even more.

So halfway during second year I spoke to the careers dept. and they gave me some really good advice based on what couse I seem suited to, what career i ultimately wanted and what the implications of changing course were. I left the course the weekend after and it was by far the best decision i've ever made in my life, so i'd urge you to go to the careers department for a chat about things. No point in doing a degree in something you dont like.

    Hey there,
I totally understand your problem, there are a few things i must know however before i offer advice. Firstly, how many points did you get in your lc, if you dont that many then you might not be able to get into a better course. Secondly, how did you get on in your class tests so far. I too was in your situation 5 years ago, i was doing a course in trinity and my average grade was 30 per cent in the tests during the year, howerver i stuck at it and 4 years on i was qualified.
Hope to hear from you soon,
    David
