I am planning a game next Thursday (my birthday) and wish to play somewhere special preferably links. I was gonna play Portmarnock Hotel but they are hollow-tining? (not sure that is how it is spelt) their green that day I think. Can any members confirm that? And can you guys recommend another links, not sure that I want to pay 150 to play the other Portmarnock I am happy to play about €50-75 for a round.

    Thanks

Yep, course maintenance going on all week, try Royal Dublin, their website has some specials on it. Alternatively try the Island in Donabate.

Don't know about hollow tining or green fees but +1 on the Island, a great course IMO.

€65 at The Island, and the most fun of all the Dublin links.

They were advertising for full memberships today on the back of the Irish Times... not cheap!

would the european club be too far out of dublin for you? he usually does good winter deals.

I'd say the Island is the best in the Dublin area. However for €65 in winter they don't let you play from the fairway at all which is poor value imo. I'm all for protecting the course but €65 to play every shot from the side of the fairway is a bit much. Although the rough is very light it forces you to take bad angles into pretty much every hole..

Fair point. What about the other Dublin links? I'd be fairly sure Portmarnock is the same but Portmarnock Links wouldn't have a problem (and cheaper too), even if it is hollow-tined

    Hey Kev,

No Portmarnock has been off full fairways for the last five weeks anyway. And IIRC it was like that all winter. You'd be given a divot bag to take with you when you go out though.

If you are the north side of the city then Baltray might be worth looking in to. If you are south dublin I think id head to the European if it was me. The Island is a great course but playing off the sides of the fairway is a bit of a pain. Royal Dublin will be the same, or else they'll give you a mat to play off. Not sure about Portmarnock.

Playing Royal Dublin, they are on fairways now apparently.

    Thanks
