The Ka is a good little car, but not one of the ads you posted makes any mention whatsoever of service history.

nope, but then again i haven't seen many adds in the price group which mention a full service history...

You only need one, just take your time. Buying a car that hasn't been cared for is a false economy.

Check the body and chassis very carefully as rust especially in the back chassis is a very common achilles heel of the Ka....!

    Its discussed here

The mechanicals are fairly reliable if looked after...!

Kas while being a mindblowingly good car to drive up to 20k miles can be in dreadful condition by 45k miles.Their suspension will be shot with rubber bushings and /or shocks needing replacing ...the engine is never going to be good for high miles (or even much over 70-80k miles)unless pampered ...while theyre cheap(er!) to fix ,you sure will have to...Id guess that the average 98 (or CERTAINLY 2000) Micra would be a better buy than the average 2005 Ka....seriously!For Gods sake dont pay big money for a 'nearly new' one .Might be worth a punt at very low mileage(ie under 30k) if under 2500 euro

Actually I would be doing a fair bit of motorway driving.
But as the Ka has a 1.3l engine, I thought it'ld be better on the motorway than a 1l Micra or Yaris...

What do you think about the Fiesta and the Puma??

The rust isn't an issue with an Irish Ka, honestJohn is a UK site. My sister has a 01 Ka that is washed about twice every 6 months and there is no rust on it. They don't give trouble, the suspension and whatnot will be fine in most cases unless they have been used to cart a few people about. One of the spark plugs can rust to the engine head making it an ordeal to remove but if the car has been serviced regularly this won't be an issue. I wouldn't fancy one if I was doing a good bit of motorway driving, the 1.25 Fiesta would be a better job for that. The 1.3 engine in the Ka is an ancient ole lump and it sounds awful, the 1.25 was put in later Ka models.

The Irish ones rust too. Had to get rid of one before because there was rust starting to appear all over it.

There was a fairly long thread about the Puma and a ladys buying one recently ,might interest you to do a search on it.In my family we've had two Ka's (both under 15k miles)-make that three (last although barely 4 years was a dog by 45k miles) and a Puma -needed shocks and a starter motor at 40k miles!!!!I would not recommend these vehicles to you ...The Ka engine wont be any faster than the 1 Litres and uses quite a bit more fuel.
Depending on your budget Id suggest 98/99/00 Micra ,99-02 Yaris ,06-09 Aygo if youre going the small and sensible ptrol route ....some of the small diesels are phenomenally light on fuel but it can be hard to find a good ,well priced one.If youre looking for something a little more sporty like the Puma ,hmmm well if you want something really different (as few as 20 sold in last 3 or 4 years ?I AM selling a Panda 100hp (check my profile to find ad on adverts.ie),an MX5 if the insurance is manageable should be pretty bomb proof in most senses but do watch the rear wheel drive handling ,it wont forgive any mistakes in the wet.
There WILL be people on to defend the aul Fords (the clue is often in their usernames with Ford connections!)but its pretty much a solid rule of thumb that the japanese cars are more reliable... with a few exceptions

You need to be a complete oaf to push the MX5 into unforgiving, wet or dry.

OP if you are going to be doing a lot of motorway miles why are you looking at small city runarounds? You would be signifigantly happier in something like this, IMO.

Well, its gonna be the first car so I was looking at cars which would be easy on the insurance and cheap to run. Though I did realise that a 1l engine could end up using more fuel on the motorway than a bigger engine...
But yeah, cheap and realiable is what I'm looking for...

The Golf does look good. But I herd Golfs are usually trashed around and so its hard to find a good one...

And Ytareh, the Panda looks really good but its wayyy out of my budget. I'm looking for something under 3k...
And I think the MX5 wouldn't be very nice on the insurance either...
