What harm/good does it do to change DNS servers on both modem and router?

Right now my Eircom modem has the Eircom DNS's listed, but my router has OpenDNS's. Is there a point to changing them on the modem?

it won't do any harm at all, but its pointless to do as you will only be using the dns settings that are being provided by the device dishing out your IP address if you are using dhcp or your default gateway if you've set up a static ip address, unless you have set it manually in your tcp/ip settings on your pc(s) in which case those would take precedence.

if you want to optimise it as best you can then download the dns benchmarking tool from grc.com HERE and use the results to set the two or three (depending on what your router will allow) fastest dns servers from your location from the results of that.

if you want to check what your PC is using for DNS then just do an ipconfig/all from a dos prompt and see what it says there and it willprobably list your router or modem's IP address as your dns server.
