Got a 97 corsa 1.2 tonight for a coupe of hundred euro 89k the clock

The fuel needle looks bolloxed hovers form middle to empty and the oil looked a little dirty so that will be changed

Aswell no service history so im thinking of replacing the timing chain how much does this cost roughly obviously it wont be a main dealer doing it

97 corsa 1.2 should have the 8 valve engine and not the 16 valve, therefore timing belt not timing chain. Easy way to tell is look and see if it has plug leads, or has a coil pack directly on top of the plugs. If it has plug leads then it's 8 valve.

If doing the timing belt then do the water pump when you are at it ... if it fails it would have the same effect as a broken belt as the water pump tensions the timing belt.

Fuel gauge could be expensive. There should be an access hole (8 inches or so in diameter) under the rear seat. However the tank unit has both the fuel pump and fuel gauge. The fuel pumps have been known to fail, so usually a tank unit is sold out of a scrapped car for this reason, so it might be hard to get a secondhand fuel gauge.
