Do e-mails sent within a company legally need to be stored for a minimum period of time?

Let's say two departmental manager e-mail each other discussing the suitability of an employee for promotion.
Can they legally delete these e-mails a day or so after sending / receiving them?

I imagine they could, although for something like that, there should be records to demonstrate that employment legislation was being upheld and deleting e-mail might be seen as suspicious, especially if both do it. However, unbeknownst to the managers, there are probably back-ups somewhere
