So, from some humming and hawing at http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055772875 I finally got a Canon EOS Rebel XSi, with a EF-S 18-55mm IS lens. Cost me €526.85 including shipping from [snip]no personal deatils[/snip], which I thought was good value.

Took a few photos, and resized them 25% so they wouldn't be too big for here.

Will be reading the manual over the next while to get used to the different features.

    Well done syco. Good shots.
Piece of advice, get close to the dog.
Pic 1, 2 and 4 would look even better if there was little or no backround to distract the eye.

But keep at it and remember enjoy

    Few things.
First - begin shooting in RAW.
Second - control your white balance.
Third - get "Understanding Exposure" from Brian Peterson.
    Fourth - enjoy!

One advise about the dog - it makes much more interesting pictures if you capture both people and animals from the eye level, so don't be afraid to go down. You won't get so much floor in the background and the dog will look more naturally with his head straight, not tilted upwards.

Aye. Apart from the first shot, the rest were on a tripod, with the camera about a foot off the ground.

Here's two RAW images I took at night:

ISO was 1600 in both, in Landscape mode, but the shot with the tree's shutter speed was set at 30. When I had it at 13 although brighter, it was more blurry. The garden was shot with a shutter speed of 10.

Will do. Someone gave me a DVD called "QuickPro Camera Guide DVD Tutorial for Canon EOS 450D and 1000D" which I'm planning on watching soon, and will then check the book out.

Aye. Got on my belly, and took this one. Kind of cheated, and used the AF function on the lens, instead of the MF, but still getting the hang of the MF. Getting the dog to stay still was probably the hardest thing :D

    I don't think it's cheating if you use the auto-focus ;)

not at all, considering the two night shots look out of focus..
