A tsunami alert has been issued in Japan after a powerful earthquake struck near the Okinawan coast.
The Japan Meteorological Agency gave the strength as 6.9 while the US Geological Survey put it at 7.3.
It struck at 0531 (2031 GMT), 84km (52 miles) east of Naha, on the island of Okinawa, 29km (18 miles) below the seabed, Reuters news agency reports.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage in the country, which is often hit by earthquakes.
In 1995, a magnitude-7.2 quake in the port city of Kobe killed 6,400 people.
On its website, the Japan Meteorological Agency initially warned of a tsunami of 2m (7ft) in height but later revised this down to about 0.5m (1ft 7in).
For a tsunami to be classed as "major", it has to be at least 3m.
BBC News website reader Ivan Brackin, who lives on Yoron Island, said it was the biggest quake he had felt in his 40 years in Japan but there had been no visible effects in his area.
"We're 30 yards [metres] from the sea and no sign of a tsunami," he said.
"I woke up to violent shudders that lasted about six seconds then a pause followed by a couple of sharp jumps. Jumpers are the most dangerous so that sent me under the desk."

    Lets hope it doesnt happen.
Would be pretty major from a 7.2 earthquake if it did come about.

Hopefully not, that could be disasterous. Japan's one of the densest populated countries in the world.

Indeed. Could potentially be more devistating than the last major tsunami if it picks up. We really don't realise how lucky we are in this country sometimes where natural disasters are concerned. We get a bit of snow and suddenly all hell breaks lose.

Godzilla should be around soon enough, he could save Japan, just long enough for him to go on a rampage and destroy a city again! :D

the Haitians are pretty screwed if this gets serious. Not wishing anything bad on them, but they could easily get forgotten!

revised this down to about 0.5m (1ft 7in).

    Would hardly do much damage

What ocean does Haiti lye in. I thought it was the Atlantic. The tsunami should be no problem of there's!

That poster was referring to the possibilitiy that all money, attention, aid etc would be shifted from Haiti to Japan.

Well rather than starting a new thread I'd thought I'd post this one here.
A Massive 8.5* (That's huge!) quake struck in Chile. Tsunami warning is in effect, no other news on the ground reported as of yet.

*I suspect this will probably we revised, most likely downwards, but only time will tell.

Edit : 8.8, still subject to revision of course but the USGS revised it upwards.
Linky about quake. Still no initial reports.

not having a go,but there is a rare planetary alignment forming as we speak,it will line up around the date mentioned(check nasa website) planets do have a gravity effect and its in a spinning motion we would notice it(tides) ....no ice cream then, only icebergs......

Id say more people than you think would like this to result in a big disaster in Japan. Lots of people find these events exciting to follow.
