I was toying with the idea of building a track car over the next couple of years, however theres a couple in the uk I'd be interested in for sale fully completed, now it might sound like a stupid question but do I need to VRT a track car.?

No as long as your not going to be driving it on a public road you wont need to vrt it

If you were to buy a rally car in the UK and use it for competition here would it need VRT for road rallying, even though the roads are closed and its for competition?

If it's going to be driven on a public highway (don't forget getting between stages) then yes, it needs to be VRT'd.

The majority dont VRT it tho.. Keep it on UK plates and if anyone asks at a rally a friend up the north owns it I rent it for the rallys and it goes stright back up north..

You also cant get a NCT for rally cars so you cant Tax a rally car in Ireland.

I know of a few rally cars with NCT. The problem is the emissions from the race engines and competition brake linings. Some testers consider a roll cage a structural modification and fail the car, but the NCT manual says nothing about a roll cage.

OP, if the car is never going to be on the public road and be a track only car, there's no need for VRT or tax. If it's a rally car, they tecnically need tax and NCT. Insurance is arranged through the governing body Motorsport Ireland.

You won't be driving away from the checkpoint with that story.

You don't need the NCT to tax the car.

    Please don't advise/advocate tax-avoidance or illegal activity.

no true, although it should be the case. This is why track cars don't generally have number plates on them, so you don't know if they're registered or not.

if its garaged, trailored to tracks and only driven on track then the OP should have no problem from customs.

But your right, if the car was on a drive way with english plates on it then the customs can insist on it being VRT'd or take it

strictly speaking I believe ALL vehicles coming into the state need to be registered. If it is obviously not a road car , i shouldnt think you'd have any issues with the customs though.

There's a provision in the relevant section of the 1992 Finance Act for cars which are temporarily in the country for "competition or exhibition purposes". This hasn't really been tested to any great extent.

In reality, a blind eye is turned towards it because it would be a nightmare to implement. How do you work out a rate on a Focus 06 WRC that might be over €500,000 to purchase? Do you work it out on the car as it's logbooked because most of them are down as boggo Focii? That's before you even get into the issue of good title given that the later Subaru WRCs when under contract can basically only be driven on and off a trailer without the Prodrive engineer plugging in his laptop.

For pure race cars that will never see the public road, VRT isn't necessary.

Wasn't there a dealer that had 2 or 3 track evos impounded because there was no vrt paid? And these were pure track cars that never saw a public road.

He wasn't able to demonstrate that they weren't used on the public road. It's also worth noting that it was part of a number of issues he had with the Revenue then so I don't think they were going to go take any guff from him.
