I like many am unemployed. i have a degree and great leaving cert but little work experience. Anyway, im sick of all the excessively paid, excellently pensionsed public secctor workers moaning about a little sacrifice in this economic DEPRESSION. I propose this thread for people looking for employment to state your qualifications and what job you;d like in public sector and what pay you'd accept.
I have a degree and am part qualified accounant. I'd happily take one of the clerical officer jobs as they are so well paid compared to private sector when pay/pension/security/flexibility etc are taken into account. I'd ideally like one of the higher positions and i'd do those jobs like executive officer for 75% of the pay/pension/perks that they currently get(even after recent levies/cuts). I'd also do jobs like gardai again for 66-75% of the current amount.
Are you unemployed or overqualified for a min wage job? what would you do in public sector and how much would you be happy to accept?

To be honest, a thread like this has zero chance of going anywhere good..
Would it not be more productive to go to Work & Jobs and seek career type advice?

I was unemployed for over a year, in that time I continued my open university degree, I did my first 4 accountants exams, I did the books for two small businesses for free and I spent everyday looking for work, now I have a job in an accountancy practice.

I don't say this to rub it in, but if you want a job, you should be doing a part time masters, continuing your accounting exams and treat job hunting like a job in itself.

I also get annoyed by civil service industrial action, but people I know in the civil service are just as pissed at the unions as anybody, they want to get on with their jobs.

I understand your frustration, but don't let it get you down, there is a job there for you, it will just take time. In the meantime, try to make yourself more employable

I also have a degree. I took a job in the public sector because they were the only employers here when I couldn't find a job in construction/planning. I am far from well paid. I earned more working in the private sector when I was in college. I also have no job security as I am on a temporary contract.
I am not in the union and I do not agree with the unions actions. I can also say that many many of my colleagues do not support the unions actions either. They did not want to go on strike last November. Also the "go slow" as highlighted in the media of late is a tiny tiny proportion of the public sector. Where I work, we are just getting on with our work. The only aspect of industrial action that will effect us is the ban on answering the phone next Thursday. I see that as somewhat of a blessing as that means I can concentrate on the backlog of work that I have.
So you may be bitter about being unemployed, but do not tar us all with one brush, just because of who our employers are. There are many in the public sector who do earn far more than they should and I fully agree that there should be reform in the public sector. I also know that there are many many many more that earn far below the average industrial wage, who are being crippled by the pay cuts.
I am grateful I have a job but it's by no means the "cosy well paid" job that some will have you believe.

I tend to agree. We have plenty of PS-bashing threads, we don't need a new one.
