Open Source Matlab?

    Hi there,

    I'm just trying to learn how to use matlab - complete beginner, just wondering if there is an open source version? I've heard of scilab - I'm wondering is there any big differences or flaws with this? Or can anyone suggest a different open source software?

    If you are going to be using the product just for mathematical functions, then Scilab and Sage can do the trick. Sage requires a knowledge of Python, so have never used it. Scilab is slightly more advanced, and has a good set of plugins available at http://atoms.scilab.org/. You can also integrate it with LabVIEW if you are using the product for modelling, control or decision systems.

    Octave is a project to make a close-as-possible open source clone of Matlab. I've never used it though - so i don't know how good it is.

    Never used Mathlab. I started trying a few things out on Octave recently, it's handy enough to use and I'm told it's compatable with Mathlab. Anything I've tried seems to be.

    Sci lab is also a decent front end for it, it makes it not quite as scary.
