society question

The society i play in have brought in a new rule this year in which your society handciap cant be bigger than your gui handicap.Just wondering is this the general rule with societies ? Does this system work well ?

Maybe im wrong but i dont think its a good idea.we have quiet a few high lads in the 26-28 handicap and these lads struggle alot to play to that handicaps.Quiet a few of them have joined golf clubs this year and are waiting on their handicaps. The way the clubs are wary of bandits when giving out new handicaps these lads clould probably only get around the 20 mark which effectively means they are losing 6-8 shots.last year if you werent close to playing to your handicap you went out 0.3 after every outing but under this new system that wont happen until there gui starts to go up and itll take a while to get up to a handciap that they could play to

My idea of a society is a group of lads having a bit of craic and it gives the lesser player a chance to maybe win a prize.I think under this system we could lose alot of members because the way i see it the lads wont want to pay €40-€50 to play on a course that they dont know to a handicap that will struggle on.Im just wondering what people think about this.Is this a bit harsh or is it proper order?.Ive only started taking the golf seriously the last 16months(im bloody addicted !!) since i gave up the soccer so im not sure on the way things should be done but i reckon there will be uproar when lads find out that they are losing shots on there society handicap.
For the record my society handicap is 15 and im also waiting on my gui handicap

Totally agree with you. Lots of people with GUI handicaps never play to them, especially those who don't play alot. Giving guys that don't usually challenge an interest by upping their chances is key to a good society. As you say, it should be about enjoyment, it's not Ryder Cup.

    Hey thoscon,

We have the same rule in our society. It's a rule. Rules usually suit certain people and rarely everyone.

If you have a society shocker you can get 2 shots back with us. Gets people adjusted quite quickly. We've got a friendly outing first where we can check cards before the 5 majors...

The addiction can be quite overwhelming. I played basketball for years and used to practice my jump shots everywhere (broke a couple of lamp shades), now it’s quite common to see me playing air golf while waiting for the kettle to boil.

Can get 2 shots back if he has a shocker but not a GUI member.

If they were playing GUI comps they be f**ked also so the best thing to do is play as much as possible and things should even out...

Thought you were going to say your kid turned around and you smacked him in the teeth

Society golf is like GUI where you will have the bandits who play bad during the year and get their shots back so they come good for the big prize.

I was once in a society and the cheating going on was crazy. Dropping balls when they couldn't find it. Moving balls to give them a swing when under a bush or tree, unable to count properly. Never mind grounding clubs in hazards.

I like to win as much as the other but when you are playing against people like that you are as they say pi$$ing against the wind.

i got so frustrated with it i just decided to beat them at their own game
its the only way you can compete in certain societys

Conno, trolling about cheating is more lame than your usual standard...
boring as a drug you take too regularly.

first game of the year with my society was on sunday, my handi cap with them is 18 , my gui is 9 .
every time i play with the society i play crap (no reason for this) so even when i told them my official is 9 they said dont worry about it.
now i have been playing pretty good stuff lately and scored 46 points on sunday, to tell you the truth i was embarrsed , i hate the thaught of being called a bandit , i personally would like to play off my gui .

i was talking to the captain at the outing sat and thats the type of thing he said that they were trying to save guard against .there was a lad who had a gui of 7 but his society hc was 13 last year he almost won golfer of the year but for yours truly:D
in that sense its probably a good idea but it still is a disadvantage for the lesser players.our society is split into two groups but now all of a sudden all the non gui players are gonna have an advantage over the gui players
