MotionX Drive is 99 cent, http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/motionx-gps-drive/id328095974?mt=8 This is a relatively new product from MotionX, but their other mapping software is excellent so I'd presume they've done a good job at this too.

[Edit: Actually it will cost you after the first 30 days (currently $3/month or $25/year). This gives you turn by turn, audio prompts, 3D maps, auto re-routing if you miss a turn.]

If you don't need turn by turn navigation and want to save on downloading, OffMaps is €1.59 and as the name suggests caches maps to the handset. You can also download and store any region in advance of travelling there.

Also, it's only a matter of time before Google release a web app version of their free turn by turn navigation to get around the app store's control.

Correct me if I'm wrong but even if the Google do release a web app version - you can't access the GPS info from the iPhone GPS chip from within Safari.

Motion X is not available from the Ireland iTunes store.

Bought Navigon Europe for €74.99 the other day (reduced from €99.99) - not a bargain by any means, and a lot to pay for an app, but having used lots of GPS iphone apps (via jailbreak at the time) - Navigon won hands down for me

You absolutely can, Google Buzz uses the GPS chip to locate your updates, for instance.

Voxtrek uses openstreetmap does turn by turn and is cheap. Have it, it's good considering the price. Does map caching etc.

I would consider a proper commercial product for uk/Ireland.

Motionx Drive looks great but why the hell isn't it available in Ireland?
